Universal Design for Learning (UDL): ESOL students and hearing impaired students could be supported by
being giving pictorial instructions for creating a discovery education board. Students can work together which
supports the SLD children and ESOL students who many need extra support, and it will create an environment
for student to learn academic and social vocabulary as they collaborate. Having the videos, I can also provide
a transcript for my hearing impaired students. After viewing materials, we would create an anchor chart for
reference throughout their project that will help the students to gain a deeper understanding.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher and students will talk about what are the possible causes of wars
to get the students thinking about what they kink may cause a war. Then the teacher will introduce the
American Revolution and play the video within the Discovery Education Interactive Board that was previously
created. The teacher should ask the students to listen for causes and write them down. As a class they will
then together come up with the causes of the American Revolution and play the video again as needed. The
teacher will create a timeline on an anchor chart for the students as they share what they heard from the
video for them to reference in their projects.
After doing this, the teacher will ask the students to pick a partner or two to work together in creating
their own Discovery Education Interactive Board. The one shown by the teacher will be a short example of
what it might could look like. The students will be asked to give a brief explanation of all of the causes and to
have videos and pictures to accompany their notes. After doing this, the students will present their boards to
the class since they will have all designed them differently.
Reflective Practice: To extent this assignment, the students could be asked to post their projects on a
classroom blog and go in to respond to the other groups. I could ask them to make constructive comments to
help the groups see what they did well or what may need to be added in the future. This will allow for the
students to analyze and think deeply on a level that would not be achieved otherwise.
