3. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The emphasis of this project focuses on safety for people, specifically the students of Escuela
Colombiana de Ingenieria university, because it has been a common problem with a big impact
nowadays. To begin with, most at the university need to take public transportation in Bogotá such as
“trasmilenio” or “SITP”. Therefore, the students are in danger, they become vulnerable, not only
because of the thieves, but also crimes, accidents, etc. Consequently, this project attempts to give
alternative solutions to a problem of such magnitude that has been causing discomfort for several
years, It is important to point out the fact that security is not an issue for public transportation
uniquely. In the same way, different universities face this inconvenient, so that students have to be
aware of their belongings constantly. That is why, we are going to address this problem in our project
since it turned to be a common denominator for students daily life, likewise, it has become one of the
most common reasons of complaints. As a result, is it necessary to review the cases where students
have been victims of robbery in order to create possible strategies to avoid these situations. In
summary, our project aims to list some advices for people who read this document, in order to avoid
being a victim because of different factors that affect security.

 To Talk about the different cases of insecurity in Bogota to try to give some solutions or tips
that students may use in case they have to face this kind of situation.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
 To Search the places where the theft are common and where the students are more
susceptible in Bogota
 To Show people that insecurity is one of the biggest problems in Bogota
 To compare the insecurity in Bogotá with other cities where their development is so high that
the insecurity is just a little problem.
 To Evaluate Safety and security in order to take measures, both for the students and for the

Since 2010 the “UNIVERSIDAD DE ANTIOQUIA” has been giving ideas to prevent theft into the
university, with the help of the teachers, students and directives. Besides, they have made a
polemic and a discussion, for the high index of theft in the university and realized that
students were victims. For instance, “Theft of computer equipment from the classrooms and
robberies with firearm weapons, to the students who walk in the halls of the University, are
the most remarkable acts according to the vice rector of the university Martiniano Jaime
Contreras, for him, It is the main fact that has occurred, so they made a proposal for the
delinquency. One of the tips that the teachers divulged was the need to have stronger control
inside the university with the purpose of having class without interruptions caused for victims
of robbery. However, This was an example of the insecurity in 2010, let's see another more
recent case in Bogota, a designer girl who studied at Andes University was near to get her
graduation but, one night while she was arriving to her house, unlucky for her, a man tried to
steal her phone but Daniela tried to protect herself and the man decided to shoot her.
Afterwards, the bullet finished in her head and after several months she died, indeed there is
an article about this case. Daniela’s case it's just one of the thousands occurred in Bogota.
Nowadays. the thieves decide to steal with guns and kill just because of a cell phone or some
money.

 Not only in Colombia or Bogota !!! this problem has been happening in different countries, it is
not a joke! There is another case of students this time in Guayaquil’s University, according to
the report of “EL UNIVERSO” newspaper, when the students go out of the university, they go
fast to the bus station, because some of the streets are away from the campus, though acting Commented [MMM3]: Add the missing verb

this way is very dangerous, in addition….. In this report Darío Gallegos, mentioned two cases
where he was victim of theft. He said “the first time they took my cell phone and the second
one was inside the bus when I picked it up in Tungurahua and Luis Urdaneta. At first, they took
my suitcase, then they took my watch”. Furthermore, the thieves took a student’s shoes. Also,

6. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TALK ABOUT THAT TOPIC

Security for students in Bogota is important because they carry expensive belongings in their bags
such as computers, phones, music players and objects they use for specific purposes in their
corresponding carriers, for this reason, they become target for the organized bands who take
advantage of students’ naivety and steal their personal belongings by scam or physical aggression, in
order to obtain easy money. In addition, it is essential to encourage students to report the police as Commented [MMM7]: Add preposition

soon as the theft happens. As a result, according to statistics many cases are not being reported. In
this perspective, a survey showed that 32 percent of students believe that reporting to the police
"takes a lot of time," and 23 percent did not do it because of "lack of confidence in the authority." To
sum up, what happens is that citizens scarcely denounce since it is has become very difficult and
because they spend too much time, besides in many cases there are no results. Due to the previous
arguments, it is mandatory to talk about insecurity since it is has turned into one of the biggest
problems all students face day by day and there is an urge to find solutions.
