5.3 Calendar
By the option of Calender in Leo Palm the user can not only follow the popular
Gregorian method for entry of dates but he can enter the dates according to
various calenders mentioned below. Accordingly user may obtain Gregorian
dates equivalent to other calenders.
Similarly user can change Gregorian dates in other calender dates of national
ephemeris. The 3 Indian Calender methods as described below are popular.
1. National Calender : In national calender there are 12 months Chitra,
Baishakh etc. The year begins with Chaitra and ends with Phalgun. The leap
year is similar to Gregorian system. New year starts on 22 March but in leap
year it begins on 21 March. The days in 12 months are as below .
Baisakh to Bhadrapad, all months have 31 days. In other months there are 30
days. The Chaitra has 30 days but in leap year it has 31 days. The year ac-
cording to Vikram Samvatsar ahead to Gregorian calender by 57 years.
2. Solar Calender : The Punjabi, Bengali, Nepali, Tamil and Kerala calenders
are solar calenders. In all these calenders the month begins with entry of Sun
in a zodiac sign. These have this 1 to 30 sometimes there are 29 or 31 or even
32 days in a month.
The Leo Palm incorporates Solar Calender Systems where beginning of month
varies according to different rules of different provinces.
• Punjabi Calender System : If Sun enters a sign by transit after sunrise
and before next sunrise, that day is 1st day of month.
• Nepali Calender System : The dates of Nepali calender are calculated
similar to Punjabi calender. However if Sun enters a sign after midnight
then month’s start will be from next day. If Sun’s entry is before midnight
then month will begin on the same day.
• Bengali Calender System : If Sun enters next sign before midnight then
next ay is first day of month.
The point to be noted is that there is difference of one day in Nepali and
Bengali calenders. The Bengali calender begins after one day.
• Tamil Calender System : The calculations is Tamil system are similar to
Punjabi calender. The only difference is that if entry of Sun is before sunset
then month begins on the same day otherwise on the next day.

Leo Palm 51
• Kerala Calender System : Kerala system is similar to Punjabi calender.
The difference is if Sun enters a sign before noon (18 Ghati) then month’s
start is on the same day otherwise month begins on next day.
The Sunrise method is followed by in Orissa and Punjab for fixing the start of
solar month. This is called the day of Sun’s entry in a sign by transit.
The rule of 18 ghati is followed in Kerala, sunset method in Tamilnadu whereas
the midnight method is adopted in West Bengal.
3. Lunar Calenders : The Chaitradi and Kartickadi calenders operate accord-
ing to motion of Moon. These calenders also comprise of Chaitra etc 12 months.
Every month has two fortnights Shukla (Bright) and Krishna (Dark). There are
15 dates (tithis) from Pratipada to Poornima or Amavasya. Sometimes the a
month is extra or less (Kshaya). The dates are also extra of kshaya. There are
following differences between the two varieties of Lunar calenders.
• Chaitradi Calender : In this system the year begins on Chitra Shukla
pratipada. Here the samvatsar is 57 years more than a Gregorian year. At
the time of beginning of year 15 days of Chaitra month are already over and
only 15 days remain. The month begins in dark fortnight and ends on
poornima (Full moon).
• Kartikadi Calender : In this system the new year begins on Shukla
pratipada of kartik. There are two fortnights in every month. First shukla
(Bright) Paksha and then Krishna (Dark) paksha. The year begins on next
day after Diwali. According to chaitradi Calender the Diwali falls on Kartik
Amavasya while according to Kartikadi system Diwali falls on Ashwin
Amavasya.
The Leo Palm incorporates 8 types of solar calenders. These can be operated
by option available below birth date on Main Screen as in shown on the screen.
Here just after entry of gregorian date, the year, month and Date of chosen
calender system are calculated. Similarly any date available in another cal-
ender system can be obtained in gregorian calender. The year may be obtained
according to samvat or shak system that have a difference of 135 years.
Similarly in Bengali calender, following relationship between Bengali year and
samvat exists
Bengali year = Samvat - 650

that printers that have infra red support. Some infra red to parallel converters
are also available in the market which can also be used. If the connection type
is PC, then printing is done through personal computer. The palmtop is connected
to the computer through the HotSync cradle. A printing program is installed on
the desktop computer, which controls the printing through the PC. The program
is provided along with the “LeoPalm” software and installed in the PC when
user installs the software.

120 Leo Palm

When “Connection Type” is PC then in the “Print Type” there are two options
“Screen Capture” and “Characters”. In case of “Screen Capture” the printing
program captures the palmtop screens as per the modal. What ever is displayed
on the screen is directly comes to the print page. It is just like printing of
palmtop screens as images. Desktop’s True Type fonts are not used by the
printing program.

In case of “Character” print type, the printing program captures contents of the
screen. Then printing program uses the desktop True Type fonts to display and
print the contents of the palmtop screen as per the printing modal. In this type
the display and print quality is better than the “Screen Capture”. User can also
take color printouts through Leopalm, for that he should have colored palmtop
and color printer.

the printer and the Palmtop. So higher speed will take lesser time to print. But
this speed is also depends upon the printer, some printers doesn’t support high
speed. For setting the printer connection speed select the desired printer speed

ColorScheme : Color scheme is used for printing the horoscope in colors.

Color scheme list is the same list which comes in Color Master. So there user

the Printer master and increase the Delay value by 1 either by clicking on
Delay value or by Delay navigation buttons. Repeat the process till the problem
is not solved.

Print multiple lines : Print multiple lines is also a printer setting used for
printer adjustment. Normally for Laser printers set it ‘Yes ‘ and in other printers,
set it ‘No’.

As in other Masters user can also Add/ Modify/ Remove Printers.

In Printer Master Printer Name is the name given to user settings made in

CHAPTER-VIII

8. Printing
Leo Palm is a first astrological software for handheld computers which has
printing facility. In Leo Palm printing can be done by three ways, one is through
by IR (InfraRed) port, second is through by cradle using desktop computer
and the third is through Palmtop cradle using convertor. In first method no
cable is required where as in third method appropriate data converter is required
according to your palmtop model and printer model.

1st Method : If you want to take printout through IR port then your printer must
have IR Port. If it doesn’t have IR port then you can attach an external (IR to
Printer) device which will add the IR printing facilities to the printer.

Printing through IR (Infra Red)

2nd Method : In this method apart from printer and palm top cradle, Desktop
computer is required. In this method a small program given by us runs on
Desktop computers which takes the printing matter from palm top and send it
to the printer. User will give the print command through Leo Palm software as in
other method. This method is helpful for those who are already having desktop
computer, no convertor is required.

3rd Method : For taking printout through Palmtop Cradle you need a converter
according to your palmtop model and printer model. If you have Palm IIIxe, IIIc,
Vx, VII or any other model having serial connector at one end of the palmtop
Cradle and if you have printer with Parallel port then a Serial (RS 232) to Parallel
port converter is required. If your printer has Serial port then no converter is

Leo Palm 123

required, you can directly attach your Palmtop cradle with your printer with the
help of printer cable. If you have USB printer then Serial to USB converter is
required.

If you have Palm M505, M515, Sony CLIE or any other model having USB
connector at one end of your Palmtop Cradle and having Parallel port Printer
then use either first or second method.
