Note: Attempt all questions. Marks are indicated at the end of the question.

1. a) Design using K-map a 7-segment display to display numeric values from 0 to 9.

(7)
Implement the design using NAND gates.
b) Compare the performance of LED and LCD. Also name the material with which they are (3)
constructed.

2. a) Explain and compare the operation of X-Y and X-t recorder. Also list the applications of X-Y
and X-t recorder.
(7)
b) The coil of a recording ammeter is 65mm long and 25mm wide. The rated current of the coil is
10 mA. The flux density in the air gap is 4.6 X 10-3 Wb/m 2. The damping constant is 8 X 10
-3 N-
m/rad-s- '. The moment of inertia is 8 X 10-3 kg-m2
. The spring constant is 16 X 10-3 N-m/rad.
The coulomb friction is 0.2 X 10-6 N-m.
i) Determine if the meter is underdamped, critically damped or over-damped.
ii) Determine the number of turns on the coil to produce a deflection of 100 degrees at
rated current.
iii) Determine the current required to overcome coulomb friction.
(3)

3. a) i) Derive the expression of an Amplitude Modulated wave. Show the waveforms.

(4)
ii) Consider the message signal
(3)
s (t) = 30 cos(27rt)
And carrier wave
c(t) = 40 cos(1007t)
Find the resultant Amplitude modulated wave and degree of modulation.
b) Find the carrier and modulating frequencies, the modulation index and the maximum
(3)
deviation of the FM wave represented by
vf = 72 sin(12 x 108 t + 11 sin 2100t) V
What power will this FM wave dissipate in a 100 resistor?
