Synonyms
A synonym is a word that has a different form but has the same or similar meaning or
understanding. Synonyms can also be called word equations or synonyms.
Synonym Example:
- animals = fauna
- lie = lie
- thirst = thirst
- clothes = clothes
- meet = meet
B. Antonyms
Antonym is a word that means opposite to each other. Antonim is also called the opposite.
An example of Antonym:
- loud x soft
- up x down
- rich x poor
- heaven x hell
- male x female
- over the bottom x
C. Homonyms
Homonym is a word that has a different meaning but the same pronunciation or spelling. If
the same pronunciation is called homograf, but if the same is the spelling then it is called
homophone.
A homonyms word has meaning depending on the context of the sentence that follows it.
Therefore, we still can not decide what the meaning of a word is conceived without seeing it
in the form of a whole sentence.
Homonyms example:
1. One drop of a snake King Cobra is believed to have killed one African elephant.
2. The election of the head of the council was held in a closed room.
3. The new game entered the second round but Roni was battered by his opponent.
4. "Hit that cat with a broom!" Budi commanded me at one o'clock.
Homograph
Homographs are words that have the same writing but the pronunciation and meaning are
different. Homograph is the opposite of homophones. Therefore, we can not identify the
meaning of the worded words if we do not hear or read them in a whole.
The word mat in the first sentence means a tool for cleaning the feet or shoes of dirt. While
the word mat in the second sentence is the state of the hand is not smooth.
Examples – Sentences homograph
Example:
- Envelopes
+ To send a letter to the president's father we must use envelopes (envelopes = regular mail
envelopes)
+ To be accepted into pns he gives envelopes to officials (envelopes = bribes or lubricant
money)
- Yes
+ Bu kadir can play the guitar with his foot (can = able)
+ Can the snake be accommodated into the vessel for examination (can = poison)
Homofon: Homophones
Various homophonic languages are words that have the same sound but different shapes
and meanings. In other words, the phrased words have the same pronunciation despite
having different writings and meanings.
Slightly different from homonyms, the phrasing words can we identify the meaning by
looking at the form of writing. However, if it is verbal we must hear it in a whole sentence.
Example:
Consider the following sentence!
If we hear the word bang in the first sentence, then the meaning is a call for older
men. If we hear the second sentence, then the meaning is a place of money storage.
