Slime

Materials:

● Elmer's glue
● Water
● Borax
● Food coloring
● Glitter

Steps:

1. In one bowl mix ¼ cup glue and ¼ cup water. Add food coloring and glitter.
2. In the other bowl, mix ½ teaspoon borax with ½ cup water until the borax is
dissolved.
3. Add the glue mixture to the borax solution while stirring slowly.
4. Stir as much as you can and then start to use your hands, pour off any extra
water.
What is Slime?

● Slime is a liquid, because it takes the shape of whatever container you put it in
if you wait a little while
● Slime is a non-newtonian substance because it’s thickness is affected by
things other than temperature.
● If you pull apart the slime really quickly it will break, but if you slowly stretch it
it can go on forever.
● Vinegar can dissolve slime

What happens?

● The main ingredient in school glue is polyvinyl alcohol

● The main ingredient in borax is borate ion
● These two main ingredients are attracted to each other, and combine to form
long chains
● A bunch of these chains together are what the slime is made out of.

Viscosity : a fluid's resistance to flow

Test for viscosity: two graduated cylinders, drop a ball in each, in which one does the
ball reach the bottom first.

Slime is a non-newtonian substance because its viscosity is affected by things other

than temperature. An example of a Newtonian substance would be water or alcohol.
The two basic behaviors of non-newtonian substances are shear thinning and shear
thickening. Shear thinning fluids decrease in viscosity when stress is applied
(ketchup), while shear thickening fluids increase in viscosity when stress is applied
(quicksand) IF you pull apart the slime really quickly it will break, whereas if you
slowly stretch it it can go on forever. Slime is actually a liquid, because even if it
takes awhile, it will eventually take the shape of the container it is in.
Slime is a polymer, which is composed of very large chains of molecules that are
composed of repeating units known as monomers. A single polymer molecule can
comprise hundreds of thousands of monomers. Some common natural polymers
are DNA or starch.

Slime forms as a result of cross-linking between the protein molecules of the glue
and the borate ions (B(OH)4 – ) of the borax solution..

The borate ions link the big molecules to each other, making even bigger molecules.
Since their are so many big molecules, they all get tangled, but when you apply
stress to the slime the molecules untangle and become long strands that more
resistant to flow, which is why when you squeeze slime it becomes hard.

Polyvinyl alcohol is a main ingredient in washable school glue and borate ions which
are in bora come together to make slime. Polyvinyl alcohol is a polymer, por a long
chain of identical repeating molecules. The polyvinyl alcohol attracts the borate ions,
which create links between the strands of polyvinyl alcohol, creating a giant tangled
mess of polymers that is slime.
