Amazing Jawi AR

Nowadays, Jawi script has been rarely used in daily life. However, it is still very essential for the
school children in Malaysia to know how to read and write Jawi script in order to learn
Pendidikan Islam, one of compulsory subject in the primary school.

Amazing Jawi AR is a mobile application software that will assist the user to learn Jawi
alphabets, learn the correct pronunciation of each alphabet and learn how to combine each
alphabet to form correct Jawi script. Currently, the apps is in Bahasa Malaysia and cater for
Android user only. Amazing Jawi AR enhance the learning experience by using multimedia
elements and augmented reality. This apps has 3 main modules: Introduction to the Jawi
alphabets, Jawi syllables, and reading Jawi script. In each module, the user able to interact with
the apps using augmented reality.

To use the application, the user need to download the apps from Google Play. The user can use
the application right away after installing it in the user’s smartphones.

A. Main Menu

Figure 1 below shows the main menu interface of the application. There are three important
buttons that can be chosen by the user. ‘Mula’ button is used to start the application, ‘Arahan’
button is used to read the instruction of the application and ‘Keluar’ button is to exit the
application.

B. Start Menu

Figure 2 shows the start menu interface of the application. There are three modules which are:
Kenal Jawi, Sukukata Jawi and Baca Jawi.

The Start Menu interface require the user to choose betweenthe three modules mentioned
above. If the user choose ‘Kenal Huruf Jawi’, the user will enter the introduction of Jawi
alphabets interface. Whereas, if the user choose ‘Membaca Jawi’, the user will enter the interface
to learn how to read in Jawi writing. The ‘Home’ button will bring the user to the main menu
interface.

C. Learning Jawi Alphabets Menu

This interface let the user to choose which Jawi alphabets the user want to learn. The user can
randomly choose any Jawi alphabets to learn by clicking the the Jawi alphabets button as shown
in Figure 3 and 4 below. The ‘Back’ button will bring the user back to Start Menu, while the ‘Next’
button bring the user to the next page of the Learning Jawi Alphabets Menu. The ‘Camera’ button
will bring the user to AR scene to scan cards with Jawi alphabets.

D. Learn Jawi Menu

Figure 5 shows the interface which appear after the user click on ‘Kenal Huruf Jawi’ button in
Start Menu Interface. In this interface, the user can click on ‘Huruf’ button to go toLearning Jawi
Alphabets Interface. The ‘Gambar’ button will bring the user to another interface that display the
object that represent the Jawi alphabets. The object represent each Jawi alphabet as the name
should be begin with the Jawi alphabet.

E. 2D Object Menu

Figure 6 shows the 2D object interface that represent Jawi alphabet as the object’s name begin
with each Jawi alphabets. The ‘Camera’ button will bring the user to AR scene to scan card with
pictures.

Figure 7 shows the AR Camera modules. When the AR camera pointed on the Jawi alphabet card,
3D object will appear after marker recognition process.

F. Read Learning Menu

Figure 8 shows the Syllable Learning Interface where user can learn how to read in jawi script.
The learning begin with the pronounciation of consonant and vowel alphabets combined
together. For example, Ba alphabets with Alif alphabets which will pronounce as ‘Ba’ sound.

Besides that, using the AR camera, user can combine two aphabets together and see the
combination formed in Jawi script. This is shown in Figure 9 below.

G. Baca Jawi

The last module as shown in Figure 10 below, provide several Jawi text and user can click on the
read button to hear how the text is read.

H. Summary/Conclusion

Amazing Jawi AR is suitable for children to gain knowledge, information and learn about Jawi. It
is user friendly since it is easy to use by children and adults. The user only has to scan at the
alphabet marker then the words will pop out. It can be used as an activity to gain knowledge and
an interactive learning experience for the whole family. It is hoped that by using Amazing Jawi
AR, the younger generation will become more interested to learn Jawi. Therefore, the Jawi script
will to be widely used among Malaysian and continue as an important heritage for the Malays.
