Homework #4
Due 17:00pm Sunday March 11tt by e-mail at jsgomez@ucdavis.edu
1. Let us consider a dielectric waveguide with dimensions a x b (with a>b) and a high permittivity of
𝜀𝑟 . The permittivity is so high that the waveguide can be considered to have a perfect magnetic
conductors (PMC) as walls. For simplicity, please consider that the wall with dimension ‘a’ is
located over the ‘x’ axis of a Cartesian coordinate system.
a. Derive the longitudinal electric and magnetic fields for all supported modes, as well as their
cut-off frequency expressions.
b. Obtain the fundamental mode of the waveguide, all components of the electric and magnetic
fields, and its cut-off frequency.
c. Obtain the waveguide bandwidth assuming a=8.6cm, b=4.6cm, and 𝜀𝑟 = 9.
2. Let us consider a rectangular dielectric waveguide with a very high dielectric constant 𝜀𝑟 (i.e., PMC
walls). The top and the bottom of the waveguide are covered by a perfect electric conductor (PEC),
as shown in the figure:
3. Let us a consider a sectorial waveguide with radius of 1 cm, as the shown in the figure (left). The
walls are metallic and can be considered as perfect electric conductor (PEC).
