The embodiments of the invention for which

an exclusive property or privilege is claimed

are defined as follows:

1. A process for manufacturing in continuous chloroform,

characterized in that:

a) continuously introducing an aqueous solution

sodium hypochlorite or calcium together with a

sufficient quantity of acetone to obtain a temperature of

output between 61.2 ° C and 85 ° C in a reactor

maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure to avoid formation

a gaseous phase during the reaction;

b) is allowed to react sodium hypochlorite or

calcium with acetone in the reactor for a period of

retention of at least 1 min; and

c) the chloroform formed from other products is separated

obtained in the reactor to the output thereof.

2. Method according to claim 1, characterized in

that the separation is effected by means of an expansion chamber.

3. Method according to Claim 2, characterized

in that the prériode retention within the reactor is

between 5 and 10 minutes.

4. Method according to claim 3, characterized in

that an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite

containing from 40 to 120 grams of sodium hypochlorite per liter.

5. Method according to claim 3, characterized in

that the temperature of the products obtained at the outlet of the reaction

tor is about 75 ° C and the pressure within the reactor are

about 2 atm.

17

6. The method of claim 1, 2 or 3,

characterized in that one introduces into the reactor a slight

excess of sodium or calcium hypochlorite in relation to its

stocchiométrique amount of reaction.

7. An apparatus for continuously manufacturing

chloroform, characterized in that i comprises:

a) a reactor provided with two inputs for

introducing an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite

or calcium and acetone respectively, and an output suffi-

ciently remote of inputs for a retention time

in the reactor of at least 1 min;

b) means for maitenir the pressure reactor

to avoid formation of a gaseous phase during the

reaction, and

c) an expansion chamber connected to the output of

reactor to separate the chloroform formed from other products

of the reaction.

8. Apparatus according to claim 7, characterized in

that:

the reactor is formed by two coaxial cylinders mounted

on the same basis and communicating in their upper parts;

the two inputs of the reactor pass through the base

and look directly into the inner cylinder; and

the reactor outlet is located in the cylinder

outside, near the base.

9. Apparatus according to claim 8, characterized in

that the reactor further comprises a stirrer arranged

within the inner cylinder and an expansion valve for

control the operating pressure in the reactor.

18

10. Apparatus according to claim 9, characterized

in that the means for maintaining the pressure reactor are

constituted by pumps feeding the reactor in acetone and

Pressure hypochlorite solution and a controller

adjustable flow located at the reactor outlet.

11. Apparatus according to claim 7, characterized in

it further comprises a heat exchanger for preheating

iron sodium hypochlorite or calcium is desired, with

the heat of the reaction mass out of the room

expansion.

12. Apparatus according to claim 11, characterized

in that it further comprises a control system of the

temperature at the reactor exit and a control system that

is directly controlled by this temperature control system

and changes the amount of reaction mixture which passes through

the heat exchanger depending on the temperature measured at the

reactor outlet.
13. Apparatus according to claim 7, characterized in

it further comprises a concentration control system

tions to the reactor outlet and a control system which is

directly controlled by the merger control system

and changes the amount of acetone fed into the reactor

do according to exit concentrations.
