SETTING UP THE GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE TUTORIAL #11
GEOMETRY CREATION
Please refer to the Getting Started section to set up the graphics user interface.
Mastercam lets you read (import) a variety of CAD file types into the Mastercam database. You can also write (export)
Mastercam files to a variety of different file formats.
To import a SolidWorks file in Mastercam you have to use the Open function and then select SOLIDWORKS Files from the
file type list. You can read a solid entity into all Mastercam products except Design LT. However, to modify, create, or write
solid entities, you must be running a Solids version of Mastercam. In our case we will import trimmed surfaces instead of
solids.
FILE
Open.
In the file name extension area click on the drop down arrow as shown.
From the File type list, select SOLIDSWORKS Files (*.sldprt; *sldasm; *.slddrw) as shown.

IMPORTING THE SOLIDWORKS FILE GEOMETRY TUTORIAL #11
From the SOLIDWORKS File Parameters dialog box, enable Solids and Edge curves as shown.
Select the OK button to exit the SOLIDWORKS File Parameters dialog box.
Open the file.
Right mouse click in the graphics window and select the Isometric view as shown.
NOTE: The geometry in SolidWorks is usually created in the Front plane. In Mastercam you will need to rotate
the part as it will be setup in the fixture at the machine. You will use Translate 3D to translate it to the proper
plane.

From the Analyze group, select Statistics as shown. This allows you to see the type of entities that you brought
into Mastercam.
Translate to Plane allows you to move or create copies of selected entities between views (from one plane to another).
This translation does not alter the entities' orientation, size, or shape. There are 7 pre defined planes in Mastercam.
Figure: 3.0.1 shows six of them: Top, Front, Back, Bottom, Right Side, and Left Side. The system has also an Isometric
plane.

TRANSFORM
From the Position group, click on the drop down arrow below the Translate icon and select Translate to Plane
as shown.

TRANSLATE THE GEOMETRY TO THE PROPER PLANE TUTORIAL #11
Right mouse click in the graphics window and select the Clear Colors button to reset the color to the system
color.
NOTE: When performing a transform function, Mastercam creates a temporary group from the originals (red)
and a result (purple) group from the transformed entities. These system groups appear in the Groups dialog
box. However, they stay in effect only until you use the Clear Colors function or perform another transform
function.
NOTE: To shade or unshade the geometry, hold down the Alt key and press S (Alt + S).
In this step you will learn how to change the color of the wireframe.
From the Quick Mask buttons, click on the upper left side of the Select all wireframe entities button as shown.
NOTE: The Quick Mask buttons allow you to select "only" and "all" of the specific entities you want.

CHANGE THE WIREFRAME COLOR TUTORIAL #11
Right mouse click in the graphics window, click on the drop down arrow beside the Wireframe Color icon and
select More Colors as shown.
In the Colors dialog box, select the dark blue color (number 1) as shown.

SETUP SHEET: TUTORIAL #11
TOOLPATH CREATION
SUGGESTED FIXTURE:
SETUP SHEET:
In Mastercam, you select a Machine Definition before creating any toolpaths. The Machine Definition is a model of your
machine tool's capabilities and features and acts like a template for setting up machining jobs. The machine definition ties
together three main components: the schematic model of your machine tool’s components, the control definition that
models your control unit’s capabilities and the post processor that will generate the required machine code (G-code). For a
Mill Advanced exercise (3D toolpaths) you need only a basic machine definition.
Step Preview:
NOTE: For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using the Mill Default MM.MCAM-MMD machine.
Press Alt + F1 to fit the drawing to the screen.
To display the Toolpaths Manager panel select the Toolpaths tab as shown.
NOTE: If a Machine Group already exist in the Toolpaths Manager, skip the next step.

SELECT THE MACHINE AND SET UP THE STOCK TUTORIAL #11
MACHINE
From the Machine Type group, select the drop down arrow below Mill.
Select Manage List.
Select MILL DEFAULT MM.MCAM-MMD from the list and press Add.
Select the OK button to exit the Machine Definition Menu Management dialog box.
NOTE: Once you select MILL DEFAULT MM.MCAM -MMD the ribbon bar changes to reflect the toolpaths that
could be used with this machine.
From the Machine Type group, click on the drop down arrow below Mill and select MILL DEFAULT MM.MCAM-
MMD as shown.
Select the plus sign in front of Properties in the Toolpaths Manager to expand the Toolpaths Group Properties.

SELECT THE MACHINE AND SET UP THE STOCK TUTORIAL #11
Figure: 6.0.2
NOTE: The extra 13mm added to the stock thickness is for fixture purposes.
Select the OK button to exit the Machine Group Properties dialog box.
Press Alt + F1 to fit the drawing to the screen.
NOTE: Remember that the stock is not geometry and cannot be selected.
This tutorial utilizes a set of legacy surface toolpaths to machine the part. We begin by showing you legacy
toolpaths as they still have some value in certain situations and the parameters for these toolpaths are easier
to understand for someone just getting started with 3D machining.
That being said, there are more efficient toolpaths that can be used to machine the same part. If you were to
actually machine this part, we would suggest you use the Surface High Speed OptiArea toolpath as your
roughing toolpath of choice. Finally, to finish the part, you could use the Surface High Speed Hybrid toolpath
which we describe in Tutorial 4.

ROUGH OUT THE PART USING SURFACE ROUGH POCKET TUTORIAL #11
The Surface Rough Pocket toolpath is used to remove a lot of stock quickly by creating a series of planar cuts (constant Z).
It is used to machine both bosses and cavities on surfaces or solid models.

TOOLPATHS
From the 3D group, select the Pocket icon.
If a prompt appears to Enter new NC name, select the OK button to accept the default as shown.
