OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, students are expected to:

1. Identify the Pedagogy, its Principles and the Types of Learning Styles.

2. Cite the importance of Pedagogy and the learning styles.

3. Recognize the use of Learning styles in diversity of learners.

Introduction to Pedagogy of Learning

 Pedagogy - the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic

subject or theoretical concept.
 Importance of Pedagogy in Learning.
By pedagogy, we mean the dynamic relationship between learning, teaching and
culture. Teachers’ actions in the classroom, in relation to learning and teaching,
are underpinned by the ideas and values that they have about education.
Pedagogy interacts with and draws together beliefs about learners and learning,
teacher and teaching, and curriculum. It also includes consideration of the
context in which learning and teaching takes place.
Pedagogy is often shaped by a teacher’s own experience of learning. For many
this was simply knowledge being transmitted by their teacher. Their role as
students was to receive this knowledge without question or other interaction.
This approach will not give the students of today the experiences and skills that
they need to learn, work and live in the 21st century – such as critical thinking,
problem solving, communication and collaboration. On-going teacher education
can help to address this short-fall but evidence shows it will not be enough to
change policy and practice.

Principles of Pedagogy of Learning

1. The learning environment is supportive, respectful and productive.

Principle in action

 Positive relationships are developed between the teacher and students and
between students.
 A culture of value and respect for individuals and their communities is modelled,
established and maintained.
 Learning experiences promote self confidence and risk taking in student learning.
 Effort is valued and recognised to support and encourage student success

2. The learning environment promotes self motivation, persistence, independence and

interdependence.

Principle in action

 Students set goals and take responsibility for their learning.

 Students cooperate and collaborate to promote meaningful learning.
 Teachers emphasise quality of learning through high expectations.

3. Student needs, interests and diversity are reflected in the learning experiences and
program content.

Principle in action

 A wide range of teaching strategies and learning experiences are used to

promote different ways of learning and thinking.
 Teaching strategies and learning experiences offer flexibility to respond to
student needs.
 Prior learning, knowledge and skills are recognised and built on.

4. Students are challenged and provide opportunities to develop deep understanding,

reflect on values and attitudes and build and apply skills.

Principle in action

 Interactive learning approaches are used to encourage critical thinking, creativity,

reflection and problem solving.
 Learning is sustained and progressive over time.
 Learning experiences are reflective of students’ real life context to build
connections.

5. Assessment is integral to teaching and learning.

Principle in action

 Assessment is used regularly to offer feedback to students and inform planning

and teaching
 Assessment practices encourage reflection and self assessment
Learning Styles

Definiton:

 Learning Styles is a group of characteristics, attitude and behavior that define

your way of learning.
 Learning Styles is particularly way in which the mind receives and processes
information (Carter, et al., 1999)

Types of Learning Styles

 Visual Learners. Students who are natural visual learners will be better taught
with as many pictures and imagery for explanation of concepts.
 Musical Learners. Learners who respond primarily to sound can be challenging
for teachers who aren't teaching a lesson about music.
 Verbal Learners. When you first hear 'verbal learner' as a teacher, you might
think this is the easy one, compared to the other different types of learning
styles. Students with strong verbal learning skills often become journalists, other
types of writers, public speakers, and teachers themselves.
 Physical Learners. These individuals are physical learners, and they express
themselves in the same way. These types of learners respond to words that incite
feeling and physical activity.
 Logical Learners. These learners are the ones who are always making lists, getting
organized, and trying to find the link between one piece of the puzzle and
another.
 Interpersonal Learners. Social learners are natural group workers, and are the
kinds of students who seem to be everywhere in school – at all the
extracurricular activities, sports, band, debate, and socializing with teachers and
students throughout the day.
 Interpersonal Learners. Some people think that solitary learners are shy or
sometimes rude because they often keep to themselves. They may come across
as introverted, compared to the other different types of learners in the
classroom.
