ing so much aid in the form of power,
weapons and money to Kurdish ighters
in Syria, Iraq and Turkey despite Kur‐
dish ighters being on the list of recog‐
nised terrorist groups for mass civilian
bombings in Turkey, a NATO member
and ally of the US.

Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Armenia to
form a new state. Kurdistan.

ty including NATO members not to do

ington "would want for the referendum

tween the Kurdistan region and the fed‐
eral government in Baghdad should be
addressed through dialogue".

Millions of tourists are expected to take
to the roads in the US in the coming
days to view a once-in-a-century total
solar eclipse.
Authorities expect as many as 7.4 mil‐
lion people to travel to areas where the
Moon will completely block out the Sun
on Monday 21 August 2017. A total so‐
lar eclipse is typically only visible from
across the entire width of the US main‐
land once every 100 years.
Parts of fourteen separate states, from
Oregon in the west to South Carolina in
the east, lie in the path of the total
eclipse, a partial eclipse will be visible
from much of North America.
Michael Zeiler, from the Great Ameri‐
can Eclipse, said: "Imagine 20 Wood‐
stock festivals occurring simultaneously
across the nation. Large numbers of vis‐
itors will overwhelm lodging and other
resources in the path of totality.
Locals have started charging over $100
USD/day to park inside the "totality
zone".
"here is a real danger during the two
minutes of totality that traffic still on
the road will pull over at unsafe loca‐
tions with distracted drivers behind
them."
It is the irst total solar eclipse that will
completely cross the continental United

iPhone 8 to come in
only 3 colours
Recent video leaks of the models Apple
have given to accessory designers have
claimed that the upcoming iPhone 8
will be available in just three colour
choices: all black, all white, and a new
shade of gold.
Both the all white and gold models fea‐
ture a white front side, whereas the
black model is entirely black.
Along the sides is a stainless steel band
that is colour matched to the back, so
the gold model features a gold band, the
white model features a silver band and
the black model of course features a
black band.
While some reports had previously
claimed the iPhone 8 would not come in
white, a throw back and nod to the early
days of Apple's irst iPods which were
only available in white gloss as where
the old MacBooks of the early 2000s, a
more recent analyst note from KGI's
Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the device
will come in three colors, one of them
being white.
An earlier report also stated the iPhone
8 would come in a new mirror-like color
variant, but we haven't heard anything
about that since and no accessory de‐
signers are making products for this
colour option.
Whilst in the Middle East Apple devices
in gold vastly out perform any other
colour in the west the black (in particu‐
lar mat black) dramatically out sells all
other colours. So it seem logical that for
their 10th anniversary of the iPhone
Apple would keep the two best selling
colours and add in the original colour.
(Yes iPhone 1 was mat silver and black,
but iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S and 5 were
only available in Black or White. iPods
only came in white with black being
added as a second colour. he iPhone 5C
came in a wide range of plastic colours,
5S saw the addition of gold and space
grey, (5)SE saw space grey dropped and
black dropped, 6s and 6S plus saw the
addition of (pink) rose-gold and the 7
and 7 plus saw the additions of red,
gloss black (jet black) and mat black.
Gold was launched as a limited colour
intended to only be available on new de‐
vices for the irst three months after re‐
lease date. On Apple's website older
models are not sold in gold at all, a trick
lost on Apple's western clientele but
bought into on a large scale by Middle
Eastern consumers.
he iPhone 8 is expected to be officially
announced and released in just a couple
of week's time, with a very limited num‐
ber having been pre-reserve some in
black, white and gold.
As Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone, the
device is likely to feature wireless charg‐
ing, as well as fast charging when used
with a USB-C Lightning cable.
Other new features include an OLED
display, augmented reality capabilities,
camera improvements, face recognition,
and a few more surprise additions, and
dare we say it losses.
We're also expecting an iPhone 7s and
iPhone 7s Plus with wireless charging
support and more enhancements.

So when one businessman in Muscat

June 2016 it was very unlikely that the

comments in response to deadly vio‐
lence by white supremacists in Char‐
lottesville.
In what could prove to be a deining
moment for his controversial presiden‐
cy Trump was forced to disband two ad‐
visory councils consisting of high pro‐
ile chief executives of major US compa‐
nies.
he fallout came amid a chorus of public
disapproval from Republicans led by
President George H. W. Bush, and presi‐
dent George W. Bush, who issued a rare
joint statement condemning "bigotry"
and quoting the Declaration of Inde‐
pendence.
he reaction againstTrump was interna‐

May, whom initially refused to con‐

is being removed because he fought to
keep slavery legal in the US.

Trump made matters worse when he
condemned the removal of the statue
stating that "you can't change the past"

Venezuela may have a fearsome rep‐
utation in the US media by the real‐

With a population of 32 million
Venezuela only has 16 thousand prison‐
ers, and has never had more than 50
thousand.

tion of 53 million (England, UK in total
66 million) has a current prison popula‐
tion of 86 thousand. Twice the popula‐
tion of Venezuela but more than four
times the prison rate.
Unlike the UK and US where mega pris‐
ons hold thousands of inmates in
crowded dirty and violent conditions
with little room to move or stand,
Venezuela operates micro prisons some
with only 100 inmates.
Yet when violence does lare up in
Venezuela's prison system it's typically
not prisoner on prisoner violence, the
inmates take out their frustrations on
the guards, in a scale the US and UK
never see.
At least 37 prisoners have been killed

Security forces raided the prison in
Puerto Ayacucho the capital of the
southern jungle state of Amazonas
seeking to restore order.
Inmates of a tiny jungle state prison
had seized control of the facility several
weeks ago.
Criminal gangs often effectively control
smaller, rural prisons in the country,
meaning inmates frequently have access
to automatic weapons.
"his was a massacre," tweeted the state
governor Liborio Guarulla following the
raid.
"At midnight special forces showed up
and through the night we heard gunire
and explosions," he said.
He added that the city's morgue was
overwhelmed and was struggling to
handle so many bodies.
A city council member, Jose Mejias, said
gunshots were heard all night.
"he government went in to try to re‐
gain control of the jail", he said. "he
prisoners resisted."
he Venezuela state prosecutor's office
conirmed it is investigating 37 prisoner
deaths in the prison and that 14 serious
officer injuries.
he death toll is the country's second
worst in history since 61 people were
killed in a prison riot in 2013.
Venezuela has around 30 prisons, many
of which are micro prisons and luctu‐
ate from stable to overcrowded.
he facility in question only housed
about 110 inmates, said Guarulla.
he country's prison system was built to
hold just 16'000 inmates according to
the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory,
whom also concluded that at it's peak
the system has housed up to 50'000.
Weapons found in the aftermath of the
prison include fully automatic riles,
grenades, ire bombs and high caliber
hand guns.
As protests over the deaths stread
through the country fears rise in a na‐
tion already crumbling under relentless
antigovernment riots and protests.

of England, Prince Philip.
he Duke of Edinburgh and husband to
the Queen of England, Prince Philip,
had reportedly told Tony Blair and his
communications team to "f*** off!" dur‐
ing a row over his daughter-in-law,
Princess Diana's funeral.
he Middle East is a region where Roy‐
als still have enormous power and inlu‐
ence and are much loved and respected
by their people. Such outbursts are un‐
heard of and the story has spread quick‐
ly through the region. Social media such
as instagram, twitter and facebook
burst into a frenzy with the news as the
article quickly spreads through the re‐
gion's major media outlets.
An "anguished" Prince Philip is said to
have grown furious after it was suggest‐
ed Prince William and Prince Harry
should walk behind their mother's cof‐
in "to show the Royals cared".
he angry exchange reportedly hap‐
pened during a conference call between
Balmoral and Buckingham Palace,
where Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair and
other members of the former Prime
Minister's team were meeting Royal
aides.
he Queen, who did not take part in the
call, is said to have later made it clear
she supported her husband's emotional
intervention.
Other ideas loated by Blair and his
team during the conversation included
erecting a giant screen in a Royal park

he call was witnessed by Anji Hunter,
Blair's inluential Director of Govern‐
ment Relations, who has spoken of it in
7 Days, a new BBC ilm about Diana's
funeral.
"I can remember - it sends a tingle up
my back," she told a televised documen‐
tary crew earlier this year.
"We were all talking about how William
and Harry should be involved and sud‐
denly came Prince Philip's voice. We
hadn't heard from him before, but he
was really anguished."
Hunter's husband, Sky TV political
commentator Adam Boulton, provided
a vivid account of the phonecall in his
book about Blair's government, Tony's
Ten Years.
He wrote: "he Queen relished the mo‐
ment when Philip bellowed over the
speakerphone from Balmoral:
"F*** off. We are talking about two boys
who have just lost their mother."
Asked about the Prince's outburst this
week, Boulton told the Press:
"He was trying to remind everyone that
human feelings were involved. No. 10
were trying to help the Royals present
things in the best way, but may have
seemed insensitive. he princes were
uneasy about walking behind the coffin,

to be seen mourning in public was

he Prince's anger subsided and he ulti‐
mately helped to persuade William, who
had wanted to grieve in private, to walk
with him behind Diana's coffin along‐
side Harry and the Earl of Spencer.
He is said to have asked William: "If I
walk, will you walk with me?"
Although the royal family of the UK is
legislated to be separate from the gov‐
ernment and bares purely a symbolic
purpose, not meant to get involved in
day to day political affairs. Both Prince
Philip and son, Prince Charles have
been reported numerous times by
British media to have tried or succeeded
in inluencing Downing Street at key

inhabitable cities in
the world
Melbourne makes it to number 1 for
the seventh year in a row
he Australian city has topped the
Economist Intelligence Unit's ranking
of the most liveable cities in the world
for the seventh year in a row.
Melbourne received a score of 97.5 out
of 100 on the annual list, which assess‐
es stability, healthcare, culture and en‐
vironment, education and infrastruc‐
ture in 140 different cities.
"While the improvement is marginal it
does relect a positive note for global
livability, which has been beset by
mounting instability over the course of
the last decade," says Jon Copestake,
editor of the survey.
"Many of the challenges to livability
have not gone away, terror attacks have
continued and geopolitical posturing

has created further international uncer‐
tainty. Perhaps a turning point has been
reached but livability levels remain low
by historical standards."
Unsurprisingly the bottom of the list is
made up of cities devastated by war,
poverty and political unrest.
Syria's capital, Damascus, is at the very
bottom, with an overall livability rating
of just 30.2, while Nigeria's Lagos and
Libya's Tripoli are just slightly ahead,
with scores of 36 and 36.6 respectively.
Austrian capital Vienna came in second
place, with a score of 97.4, and Canada's
Vancouver received a rating of 97.3,
with both cities retaining their places
from 2016.
While very little has changed at the top
end of the list in the past 12 months,
there have been some major changes
further down.
Iceland's Reykjavik moved up 13 places
from 50 to 37 with a score of 89.9. his
signiicant jump is thought to stem
from a rise in tourism as well as rede‐
velopment. Amsterdam, which has seen
a decline in crime rates in recent years,
has also progressed, shifting up to 18th
spot with a score of 94.0.
It's a slightly bleaker picture for Manch‐
ester and Stockholm, whose rankings
have fallen as a result of high-proile
terrorist attacks. Manchester dropped
from 43 to 51 on the list, while Stock‐
holm is down to 26, with an overall
score of 92.1.
However the overall result is positive on
a global scale as 12 cities have seen an
improvement in livability, while just six
have experienced a decline.
According to the EIU report Australia
and Canada are the most inhabitable
countries on earth today. he two coun‐
tries make up all of the top 7 places just
between themselves.

United Nations Committee in Geneva hears
evidence against the UK
Last year, along with 5 other NGO's,
Race Equality First was asked to
give evidence in Geneva to the Unit‐
ed Nations Committee for the Elim‐
ination of Racial Discrimination.
he purpose was to give feedback on the
UK Government's commitment to racial
equality.
Between the 5 of us, each of us focused
on speciic government policy and prac‐
tice. I was asked to focus on the Prevent
Duty to give a statement on how this
impacted on certain racial and religious
groups.
I'm sure you won't be surprised to know
that the feedback was negative and
showed that the majority of Muslims
and UK NGOs are concerned that Mus‐
lims are disproportionately targeted un‐
der the Prevent duty and are denied the
protections against discrimination un‐
der the International Convention on
the Elimination of Racial Discrimina‐
tion, the Equality Act 2010 and the Hu‐
man Rights Act 1998.
A parallel concern of ours was the em‐
phasis on children and young people:
between January 2012 and December
2015, 415 children aged ten and under
and 1,839 children under 15 had been
referred to Channel.
he operation of Prevent puts the UK in
breach of certain of its obligations un‐
der the UN Convention on the Rights of
the Child (CRC), with a systematic
breach of children's human rights in the
school setting.
Prevent has led to violations of the
CRC, many of which are parallel rights
guaranteed under Article 5 of this Con‐
vention, including: rights to education;
freedom of expression; freedom of reli‐
gion; the right to privacy; the right to
freedom from discrimination and the
fundamental principle that actions tak‐
en in relation to children must treat the
child's best interests as a primary con‐
sideration.
here are numerous examples of Mus‐
lim students being targeted and stigma‐
tised. We are also aware that many
Muslim parents are now teaching their
children not to discuss at school aspects
of their religion or culture or certain in‐
ternational conlicts.
Young people report they now feel
they have no 'safe places' where they
can speak openly about their con‐
cerns.

he duty has alienated a lot of Muslims
and made them feel they are a 'suspect
community'. his is compounded in a
context of growing Islamophobia, anti-
Muslim sentiment and hate crime di‐
rected at visible Muslims. Our core
work at Race Equality First around hate
crime and discrimination shows a spike
in Islamophobic hate crimes and dis‐
crimination every time we hear about a
terrorist act in the news.
We agree that we need a counter terror‐
ism strategy in the UK to protect our‐
selves, our communities and our chil‐
dren. None of us want to live in a coun‐
try where you are not sure where the
next bomb is going off, but none of us
want to live in a country where you
have to look over your shoulder and
watch what you say because you don't
know how it's going to be used.
Something that Muslims all over the
world have been repeating over and
over for years is that terrorism has
nothing to do with Islam. he two con‐
cepts directly oppose each other. Ter‐
rorism is murder. Islam teaches that
taking the life of even one single human
- murdering someone - is forbidden and
is tantamount to killing all of mankind.
At Race Equality First we feel the solu‐
tion is in educating people about their
rights and empowering them to address
injustice, hate crime and discrimination
for themselves and their communities.
Understandably, Muslims do not agree
with most counter-terrorism strategies
because they appear to be the main tar‐
gets of these. However, Muslims also
don't like the threat of radicalisation
within their communities.
We know terrorism is not just about Islam‐
ic extremism and includes far-right ex‐
tremism, but would you ever guess this
from current UK media reporting or the
counter terrorism strategies in place?
he solution is that Muslims need to
guide and lead initiatives that work
with and for Muslims; initiatives that
seek to tackle extremism from the grass
roots and allow young people and com‐
munity members to take a pivotal role
in preventing radicalisation and ex‐
tremism in their communities.
Only Muslims can dispel common mis‐
conceptions about Islam to challenge
radicalisation, combat Islamophobia
and encourage youth participation in
social and civic life.

UAE | New taxes
Schools and Nurseries to be exempt
from new VAT
When the GCC nations announced
earlier this year that they would be
bringing in uniformed taxes across
the region with the introduction of
several new taxes such as the "Sin
Tax" and VAT, the announcement
was met with highly mixed respons‐
es.
he UAE has clariied some of these
concerns in new legislation, ruling that
the upcoming value-added tax (VAT)
will not be applicable to nurseries and
schools, a senior official told Al-Sahawat
Times. VAT will be introduced in the
UAE from 1 January 2018.
"By mid-2018, the VAT law will detail
how the tax will impact the universities
and educational institutions across the
country," Saeda Al Qaddoumi, an advis‐
er at the Federal Tax Authority, said.
Al Qaddoumi said schools and nurseries
can get tax refunds for supplies and ser‐
vices, furniture and computers.
"UAE irms will be able to register for
VAT t h r o u g h t h e F e d e r a l Ta x
Authority's website from mid-Septem‐
ber." said Khalid Ali Al Bustani, the di‐
rector-general of the Federal Tax Au‐
thority.
"Schools and educational estab‐
lishments will not be permitted to
raise their fees as a result of the in‐
troduction of VAT."
While about 300'000-350'000 compa‐
nies in the UAE will be impacted, the
whole population of the country will be
subject to the new tax system.
VAT is a consumption tax; thus, tax bur‐
den is expected to relect on the prices
and consumption. he impact of VAT on
inlation and government revenue will
vary depending on the proportion of
consumption in the economy and how
much of the consumption base is cap‐
tured by VAT.
Al Qaddoumi said VAT will not be appli‐
cable to medicines and medical equip‐
ment. "A decision will be issued to de‐
tail all sort of medicines and
equipment." he noted.
Al Qaddoumi also noted that VAT is not
applicable to exports to countries out‐
side the GCC. "Exporters are entitled to
refund any taxes imposed on exports or
material used in manufacturing these

exports." he said.
Although the inal list of exempt items
is not yet out, Al Qaddoumi said that
most food items will fall under the 5
percent VAT rate, including basic goods.
Imported goods and services will also
be taxed at 5 percent.
Businesses collecting VAT can register
online and subsequently ile returns on
a regular basis using the government's
e-services.
"Employees will not be paying VAT
because they are not practising an
independent activity."
"VAT will also be applicable to util‐
ity bills, as well as mobile and in‐
ternet bills."
Much like in the western nations were
VAT has been in action for decades, the
tax is expected to hit the poorest the
hardest who have to pay the additional
tax on everything they now buy. Al‐
though unlike the western nations the
tax will be at a lower comparable rate
with more exemptions and companies
will be banned from increasing their
prises as a direct result of the new tax.

pay up to 100% tax.

Bahrain, Kuwait. Residents may have to
pay double the price for unhealthy
products after a 'sin tax' kicks in, ex‐
perts say, but the boost to health and
the economy will be worth it many
economists and doctors claim.
he new levy on items such as
cigarettes, certain beverages and energy
drinks will be 100 per cent of the retail
price and all GCC members states have
agreed to introduce it, according to
global experts.
Analysts in Oman say the new prices
could be in place as early as the year
end.
hat means an OMR 1.2 pack of
cigarettes could then cost OMR 2.4 a
move welcomed by health ministry offi‐
cials and economists alike.
Under the GCC excise framework agree‐
ment, all GCC member states have com‐
mitted to introducing excise tax by the
end of 2017.
According to the framework published
in the Saudi official Gazette recently,
beverages, energy drinks and tobacco
will be taxed at 100 per cent while a 50
per cent tax will be levied on soft
drinks.
"Excise tax is expected to be imposed on
the importation and production of soft
drinks, energy drinks and tobacco
across the GCC," Adrienne D' Rose, se‐
nior manager, Indirect Tax at Deloitte
said.
"Although levied at import or manufac‐
ture, the rates to be applied are expect‐
ed to be primarily based on the retail
sales price (RSP) of the products, and
set at a rate of 50 per cent for soft
drinks and 100 per cent for energy
drinks and tobacco.
here has been no published guidance
on how the RSP will be determined at
this stage." In the UAE it is expected
that excise will be implemented in Q4
2017.
Saudi Arabia has already applied it. he
GCC framework also includes a Value
Added Tax (VAT) regime across all
states which is expected to begin in

2018.
Experts believe VAT will be calculated
on the excise inclusive value of the
goods, meaning yet another hike.
Where the VAT exclusive retail sales
price for a can of cola is 100 bs, the ex‐
cise should be 50 bs, resulting in an ex‐
cise inclusive cost of 150 bs, where the
excise tax is fully passed down the sup‐
ply chain.
Once introduced, VAT should be
payable in addition at 5%, resulting in a
inal price to the customer of 157.5 bs.
Costs of a pack of cigarette that costs
OMR 1 will go higher than OMR 2 while
energy drinks that cost nearly 500 bs
will cost more than OMR 1 once these
taxes are applied.
his means that the combined Sin Tax
and VAT on products such as RedBull
will be an eye-watering 110% TAX
his however assumes that the cost of
excise tax is fully passed down the sup‐
ply chain but in practice some parties in
the supply chain may elect to absorb
some of the excise cost.
"he introduction of excise is expected
to have broader impacts on consumer
behaviour, the local market and region‐
al supply chains," one leading
economist tells Al-Sahawat Times. "We
see that cost of tobacco and other such
products are very low in GCC countries
when compared to European countries.
he excise tax is certainly good for the
economy as it will help increase govern‐
ment revenue. Consumption may be af‐
fected but this will contain habits of
consuming harmful products especially
amongst the younger population." re‐
lates Fabio Scacciavillani.
Chief Economist at Oman Investment
Fund said. "Moreover, if people instead
use the money spent on tobacco on lo‐
cal products and services like a restau‐
rant, it will be a substitute for foreign
demand, which is again good for the lo‐
cal economy."
According to health department offi‐
cials, countries that had previously
raised taxes on tobacco have been able
to reduce signiicantly the impact of to‐
bacco use.
"We hope that the price of a pack [of
cigarettes] will be higher, and rise to a
level that can help reduce consumption
(signiicantly)," Dr Jawad al Lawati se‐
nior consultant and rapporteur of the
National Tobacco Control Committee at
the Ministry of Health said.
Al Lawati said that since many people
who use tobacco are poor and are more
prone to diseases, higher costs of smok‐
ing would deter them from this bad
habit.
"hey spend a large part of their income
on tobacco rather than on their
families," he stated. Residents and doc‐
tors have both welcomed the move.
"Very happy to hear this is coming soon.
We have been waiting for such a law.
his will make it harder for people espe‐
cially schoolchildren to get. Also, smok‐
ing must be restricted to certain places.
We can't have families and children be
subjected to passive smoking. It's an
unfriendly atmosphere. Glad to hear
this coming into effect this year."

Engineering said.
Dr Pradeep Maheshwari, an Internal
Medicine specialist at the Atlas
Hospital, said: "hat's a good sign. It re‐
duces the consumption of tobacco prod‐
ucts. People will think twice before
spending more on tobacco. It would be a
welcome step in addition to the govern‐
ment banning smoking in public places
and banning ads." he added.
"Taxes should be increased. he public
will not be able to easily buy these prod‐
ucts and the use may decrease."

Woman sues Johnson & Johnson for
$417 m and wins
JNJ shares drop 2.4%
Johnson & Johnson has been or‐
dered to pay a record $417 m to a
woman who says she developed
ovarian cancer after using Johnson
& Johnson baby powder.
he California jury's decision marks the
largest ever award in a string of lawsuits
that claim the irm did not adequately
warn about cancer risks from talc-based
products.
A spokeswoman for Johnson & John‐
son defended the products' safety.
he irm plans to appeal, as it has in
previous cases.
"We will appeal today's verdict because
we are guided by the science." Carol
Goodrich, spokesperson for Johnson &
Johnson Consumer Inc, said in a press
statement.
"he evidence around any link between
talc use and cancer is inconclusive."
Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in
New Jersey, USA, faces thousands of
claims from women who say they devel‐
oped cancer due to using the irm's
products to address intimate hygiene.
Johnson & Johnson has lost four of ive
previous cases tried before juries in
Missouri, which have led to more than
$300m in penalties.
he California lawsuit was brought by
Eva Echeverria, a 63-year-old woman
who said she started using baby powder
when she was 11 years old. She was di‐
agnosed with ovarian cancer 10 years
ago; the diagnosis is terminal, according
to lawyers working on the case.
he lawsuit alleged that the company
was aware of cancer risk associated with
talcum powder, but concealed that in‐
formation from the public.
he verdict included $70 m in compen‐
satory damages to Echeverria and $347
m in punitive damages.
he payout is a record for a non-class-
action case by an individual with no pri‐
or legal background. If Johnson and
Johnson fail to overturn the ruling at
appeals as they have with many previ‐
ous cases the ruling could potentially
open the company up to eye watering
class-actions. Johnson & Johnson's
shares are signiicantly down at this
current time. (-2.4% compared to this
time last month)
Is talc safe?
here have been concerns for years that
using talcum powder, particularly on
the genitals, may increase the risk of
ovarian cancer.
he scientiic evidence is not conclusive
either for or against the links to cancer
many studies suggest. he International
Agency for Research on Cancer classiies
talc used on the genitals as "possibly
carcinogenic" because of the mixed evi‐
dence.
Why is there any debate?
he mineral talc in its natural form does
contain asbestos and does cause cancer,
however, asbestos-free talc has been
used in baby powder and other cosmet‐
ics since the 1970s. But the studies on
asbestos-free talc give contradictory re‐
sults.
It has been linked to a cancer risk in
some studies, but there are concerns
that the research may be biased as they
often rely on people remembering how
much talc they used years ago. Other
studies have argued there is no link at
all and there is no link between talc in
contraceptives such as diaphragms and
condoms (which would be close to the
ovaries) and cancer.
Also there does not seem to be a "dose-
response" for talc, unlike with known
carcinogens like tobacco where the
more you smoke, the greater the risk of

lung cancer.
What should women do?
he charity Ovacome says there is no
deinitive evidence and that the worst-
case scenario is that using talc increases
the risk of cancer by a third.
Ovacome adds: "Ovarian cancer is a
rare disease, and increasing a small risk
by a third still gives a small risk. So
even if talc does increase the risk slight‐
ly, very few women who use talc will
ever get ovarian cancer."
Campaigners however have pointed out
that those who used the product before
the removal of asbestos in the 1970s
are very clearly at a much greater risk as
asbestos is a very well known carcino‐
gen.

What is Talc?
Talcum is a clay mineral composed of
hydrated magnesium silicate. In loose
form, it is one of the most widely used
substances for baby powder, along with
corn starch.
Talcum occurs as foliated to ibrous
masses, and in rare cases crystal form.
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock com‐
posed predominantly of talc.
One particular issue with commercial
use of talc is its frequent co-location in
underground deposits with asbestos
ore. Stringent quality control since
1976, including separating cosmetic-
and food-grade talc from "industrial"
grade talc, has eliminated this issue, but
it remains a potential hazard requiring
mitigation in the mining and processing
of talc. A 2010 US FDA survey failed to
ind asbestos in a variety of talc-con‐
taining products.

Since 2001 there have been many inter‐
esting books and documentary ilms
made about these dilemmas. Yet in all
this time Hollywood has been unable to
produce a movie that informs or edu‐
cates the average movie-goer as to the
bigger picture on why failure persists
and resistance grows and spreads.
he few Hollywood ilms made about
America's wars tend to be either satires
or action movies in the John Wayne
mould, showing US troops as heroic and
caring but professional killers.
An exception was the 2008 ilm Hurt
Locker, which won six Oscars and de‐
picted the dilemmas faced by a US Ex‐
plosive Ordinance Disposal unit in Iraq.
But even Hurt Locker dealt with only a
slice of the problem, as did otherwise
well-made documentaries about US
forces in Afghanistan such as Restrepo
and Korengal. Although they still
sought to glamorise and justify US poli‐
cies and actions such as civilian casual‐
ties.
Hollywood movies do not ask the diffi‐
cult strategic questions.
Should the US invade or interfere in
countries it knows little about, how do
US troops win over local support, is na‐
tion building and armed enforcement of
democracy feasible by one part of the
US government while another part pur‐
sues a war strategy? Can the US ever
understand tribal societies through the
barrel of a gun?
Hollywood has left us devoid of any un‐
derstanding of the escalating global
chaos.
hat is until now. A remarkable new
ilm, War Machine starring Brad Pitt,
which at irst whiff sounds like a gonzo-
type war movie, brilliantly portrays
these themes outlined above.
David Michod, the Australian writer
and director, and Netlix have made a
movie that is both dark and satirical,
emotional and belly-laugh funny, as
well as being educative about US inva‐
sions.
he script is based on the real Rolling
Stone magazine article and subsequent
book he Operators: he Wild and Ter‐
rifying Inside Story of America's War in
Afghanistan, by the late journalist
Michael Hastings.
His article led to the 2010 sacking of
Stanley McChrystal, the US general in
charge of the war in Afghanistan, after
he and his staff officers made disparag‐
ing remarks about President Barack
Obama to the journalist. he movie tells
the stor y leading up to Gen
McChrystal's dismissal.
he casting of Pitt as Gen Glen McMa‐
hon, the imagined McChrystal who is
beloved by his men but also full of com‐
ic eccentrics, is near perfect. Pitt plays
his role partly as absurdist comedy but
also as someone who is on a steep
learning curve on how to win or lose
modern wars.
Full of bluster and self conidence Gen
McMahon arrives to take charge in Kab‐
ul after another general had failed.
"Let's go win this thing," and "Let's
knock this on the head," he tells his mil‐
itary aides - a coterie of equally brilliant
actors whose cameos act as foils for Gen
McMahon's slow realisation that he is
only repeating what other generals be‐
fore him have tried and failed to do.
Gen McMahon cannot get the addition‐
al US troops he needs because Obama is
reluctant to send any. Gen McMahon
cannot stop Afghan farmers from grow‐
ing poppy because, officials tell him al‐
ternative crops like cotton would be
competing with US farmers. It quickly
becomes apparent that war is used as a
means of economic control and gains
and nothing more.
Fellow Nato officers teach Gen McMa‐
hon a new reality. "You can't build a na‐
tion at gunpoint" and "you can't win the
trust of a country by invading it", he is
told.
A cynical President Hamid Karzai, su‐
perbly played by Ben Kingsley, hears out
Gen McMahon describing how he will
mark out a new direction. "We will build
Afghanistan into a free and prosperous
nation," says Gen McMahon. "Sounds a
lot like the old direction,"Karzai replies
with a knowing smile.
Several dark yet truthful encounters

speed up Gen McMahon's understand‐
ing. A troubled and angry US marine
played by Lakeith Stanield questions
how his contradictory strategy can
work. Trained to kill, the marines is
now told he must show "courageous re‐
straint".
"I can't tell the difference between the
people and the enemy," says the marine.
"hey all look alike to me. We can't help
them and kill them at the same time. I
am confused," he states.
Actress Tilda Swinton, playing a Ger‐
man politician, tells Gen McMahon that
"you are spread all over the country and
ighting 1'000 separate battles with lo‐
cal people who don't want you in their
villages and that is a war you will never
win". he general is gobsmacked into si‐
lence.
he ilm will not get a wide cinema re‐
lease because it is showing on Netlix.
However, this is a ilm that should par‐
ticularly be shown at universities and
colleges, and discussed amongst young
and old.
It helps us understand why counter-in‐
surgency is failing, terrorism expanding
and why wars have destroyed so many
countries. It helps explain why after 16
years Washington is still debating troop
numbers, whilst 'salvaged' nations held
as 'successfully' invaded such as the
Balkan states still lie in poverty and
ruin decades later.

from the Riyadh-based Al-Ekhbariya
news channel went viral across Arab so‐
cial media after the presenter mistaken‐
ly called the current site of the G20
summit "the German capital of Ham‐
burger".
he news anchor made the gaffe to con‐
clude a segment from a foreign corre‐
spondent stationed in the city of Ham‐
burg, where world leaders from the G20
group of nations were meeting last
month. Not that Hamburg is the capital
of Germany either, that would be
Berlin.
Arab Twitter users looded social media
at the time to point out that the capital
city of Germany is in fact Berlin and
that the site of the G20 summit is Ham‐
burg, while also speculating on the
cause of the error.

sandwich, popularised by US fast-food
chains and found across the world, has
long believed to have originated in the

shaping
natural
looking
eyebrows

signature undone brow. And shock‐

Step 1: Leave
them alone!
Streicher recommends leaving your eye‐
brows untouched for six to eight weeks
to see your full and natural shape. Yes,
step one really is to do, nothing. If only
all projects started this simply.
Step 2: Find a
natural looking
shape
Hold a brow pencil vertically in the mid‐
dle of each nostril, marking that point
above the eye as the beginning of each
eyebrow.
hen pivot the pencil to the outside of
each iris to mark the peak of your arch.
Finally swing the pencil to the outer
corner of your eye to mark the tail of
your arch.
Step 3: Snip, Snip
Give your brows a trim while repeating
that aforementioned mantra of step 2.
You want to cut down the long hairs
without giving brows too close of a
crop.

with a spoolie and one hair at a time,

Step 4: Keep it
calm

ommends massaging a good quality fa‐
cial oil directly into the brow bone.
"his will lubricate your skin and hair
follicles, preventing your hairs from
breaking. his will also lessen your
skin's sensitivity to the tweezing."
Step 5: Clean
them up
In order to keep your eyebrows looking
natural and unfussy skip the hot wax
and pick up a good pair of tweezers.
Less is more.
Tweeze your hairs in the direction of
growth whilst holding your skin taut.
Always use natural daylight and never
use a magnifying mirror.
Start by removing stray hairs under‐
neath the two dots at the start of your
eyebrows. Remember that you are try‐
ing to keep things natural so baby hairs
that fall into the shape of your natural

eyebrow are to be left alone.
hen repeat this with the arch and tail
sections of your eyebrows focusing on
the under side.
To avoid over tweezing Streicher recom‐
mends stepping further away from the
mirror regularly to gain a better per‐
spective.

Barcelona FC sues Neymar $10m
Spanish football club Barcelona is suing
Brazil striker Neymar for the €8.5 mil‐
lion euro ($10m USD / 3.8m OMR)

Qatar 2022 World
Cup
Despite the ongoing GCC crisis and the
blockade of Qatar approaching its third
month, Qatar's authorities insist that
it's business as usual.
Yet regular import routes for food and
building material into Qatar have been
closed since 5 June 2017, when several
countries, including Bahrain, the Unit‐
ed Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Saudi Ara‐
bia cut ties with Qatar.
So what is the impact of the Gulf crisis
on the massive infrastructure projects
that are under way to prepare for the
2022 FIFA World Cup?
According to Hassan Al-hawadi, the
secretary-general of the Qatar 2022
Supreme Committee, the impact has
been minimal. "We have very quickly,
moved on to plan B, found alternative
sources of supply as well as alternative
routes of supply … Projects are on
schedule, no delays have occurred." Al-
hawadi conidently tells Al-Sahawat
Times.
Meanwhile, the Qatar crisis continues
to intensify, with Saudi Arabia and the
United Arab Emirates reported by con‐
troversial Qatari news Network 'Al-
Jazeera' to have demanded that FIFA
withdraws Qatar's right to host the
2022 World Cup. hey accuse Qatar of
sponsoring terrorism, allegations that
Qatar continues to deny. Al-Jazeera
faces bans in several Arab nations.
