Discussion

Concepts:

Plant tissues are made up of cells with different specialized functions.

Two General Types of Plant Tissues

1. Meristematic tissues or meristem consists of immature or undifferentiated cells and are

regions of active cell division. They are usually located at the tips of the stems and roots.
These tissues are responsible for the increase in the height and the diameter of the plant.

2. Permanent Tissues consist of mature and differentiated cells performing a specialized

function.

a. Surface Tissues are tissues found in the outermost layer or covering of the plant
body and responsible for the protection of the plant. The epidermis and cork cell forms
these tissues.
b. Fundamental Tissues are found in any organ of the plant and are composed of
different types of cells which are the Parenchyma cells, Collenchyma cells and
Schlerenchyma cells. It also functions as storage for substances, Photosynthesis,
strengthening and support of the plant.
c. Vascular Tissues are conducting tissues of plants. These are the tissues responsible
for the transport of substance inside the plant body. The cells that make up these
tissues are the Phloem and Xylem.
Activity
Students will be asked to illustrate a type of cell or tissue found in plant tissues and give its
function.

Generalization
- What are plant tissues?
- How are plant tissues different from one another?
- How does the plant tissues affect the organs of the plant?

Valuing
- What will happen to the plant if a plant tissue is removed?
- Why is it important to study plant tissues?
