CHEAT SHEET
To successfully play the ute, you need to master hand and nger placement. Whether
you’re a complete novice to the ute or have some experience on the instrument, always
have a basic ngering guide with you to ensure that you’re playing the correct notes on
your ute.
This gure tells you the standard code used in most ute ngering charts and diagrams
for the ngers of your right and left hands — those that depress the ute’s keys. The
gure also tells you your ngers’ home positions on the ute.

The right-hand thumb isn’t listed because its job is solely to balance the ute, not to
depress any of the ute’s keys. The gure of the ute on the left correlates with the
standard ngering diagram on the right to tell you which of the ute’s keys are
represented in which speci c places on the ngering chart.
This chart provides you with the basic ngerings for all the notes on the ute. Print out the
illustrations if you want a handy reference during your music making!
