3 Global Energy and Population, Part 1

I) Humans put more emphasis human rather than nature compensation

a) Milk costs similar to gas but only takes ~ 1 week of grass and sunlight while gas takes 400 millions of years
b) Water per gallon costs more than gas when water is free falling form the sky.
c) Things rare in the environment are more expensive
i) Gold in ocean:
(1) More gold in ocean than Fort Knox but it’s so dilute its valueless but concentrate it into bar of gold =
tremendous value
ii) Copper:
(1) WWII cute ore out of ground  straight to bullets
(2) Today: pull ton of ore to make few pounds of copper
(a) Quality of copper ore degrades with time
II) 2015 US Consumption of every man and women and child
a) aggregate consumption: not necessarily directly consumed the products but used via environment
i) walked on the sidewalk, drove over a bridge etc.
ii) phosphate in fertilizer and w/o fertilizer not able to grow nearly the amount of food we grow to support
human population
(1) only found in few locations in a minable way
b) the commodity, energy at the bottom of chart = what it took to unlock mineral wealth at the top
i) 1000 gallons of petroleum, 600lbs of coal etc
c) to construct human habitat, you need energy to unlock mineral wealth
i) mineral wealth not used for any big construction projects anymore but for affluent lifestyle
(1) No major bridges like golden gate or dams like hoover dam has been built in the past 40-60 years
(2) Sewers and electricity lines not repaired
ii) energy used to construct habitat = ~ 300 ppl working 24/7 all year
d) every man women and child in American consumes ~ 40,000 lbs of stuff each year to support current lifestyle
e) really just borrowing minerals temporarily use them hopefully recycle  discard
III) Climate Change:
a) Floods droughts and hurricanes, tornados  destruction ot human habitat  get more mineral wealth to
replace what was destroyed
IV) Recycling:
a) Recycling can help but can’t recycle forever
i) Aluminum can: degrades w/ times esp way we recycle in US before ends up in landfill
V) Worldwide Energy Use vs Worldwide Population Growth

a) which caused which? Probably both increase in energy allowed human population to grow dramatically and the
increase in pop increased consumption of fossil fuels
i) energy used to pump water into otherwise uninhabitable areas such as Phoenix, Arizona and to make it
comfortable via air condition and trucking in goods, supplies, food etc
VI) Population Took off during Fossil Fuel Era
a)
So populated now that humans manipulating and changing ecosystems in the planet and even chem makeup of
the air we breath
b) Fossil Fuel Ear: has a beginning and end
i) End b/c fossil fuels are not being made at the same rate as we’re consuming
c) What will happen when fossil fuels scare and become very expensive?
VII) Energy Consumption Vs. Human Development Index

a) Evaluates how well one country lives

i) US uses the most but degrades as a population itself because growing amounts of chronic diseases
