Calling all Native Village of Eyak artists AA 2010

This is another year we are privileged to participate in the Arts Acquisition for museums
in the purchase of original art. We are looking for contemporary works of art for our
permanent collection. Works will be selected by the Ilanka Cultural Center Advisory
Board in consultations with staff and the Collection policy, and then purchased with
grant funds from the Rasmuson Foundation. The following guidelines are set by the
Rasmuson Foundation. If you have any question about any particular point, please call
me and we will discuss it. Final selection(s) will be made by December 1, 2010 but
must be submitted to the cultural center by 5:00pm Friday, October 22, 2010.

Selection Criteria:

 Preference will be give to tribal artists: the Artist must be an Alaskan resident and an
established artist. (Note 1: For the purposes of the Fund, an “established” artist is one whose
work has been shown or is currently being shown in (1) a juried exhibition, (2) an exhibition
sponsored by a museum, a non-profit or for-profit gallery, or the Alaska State Council on the
Arts, or (3) is in a museum, library collection, or the ASCA “Art Bank,” (4) has been
awarded a “1% For Art” commission, (5) has had work accepted for sale by a gallery, or (6)
has been purchased by a corporation/business for its public spaces. In cases of traditional
native artworks that do not appear in these forums, LaRue will contact the Project
Administrator. Typically we have been successful in working this out.

 The artwork must be already made. For the purposes of the Fund, “current” is understood to
be recent work, generally no older than 4 or 5 years and preference is given to works no older
than 2 or 3 years. Because the program focuses on contemporary art, it is necessary that
the rationale for collecting these items address their importance as works of “contemporary
art” and specifically how these pieces fit into the museum’s collecting plan for
“contemporary Alaska art.” While it is difficult to define the concept precisely, the usual
characteristics of “contemporary art” envisioned by this program are that a work of art not
only is recent, but demonstrates innovation, a distinctive style, a fresh artistic statement,
something that explores the use of media (new or traditional), or exemplifies a new, creative
idea, is the artwork “of the moment?”. Many Alaska Native artists use traditional materials
and are inspired by traditional forms, motifs, and concepts, so it is necessary to explain how
these works, otherwise so traditional, are not replicas.
 It cannot be a commissioned work of art.
 The artwork must demonstrate the artistic expertise and craftsmanship
 The artwork must reflect the cultural and /or natural history of the Native Village of Eyak
people
 The artwork must be made so as to be within the scope of curatorial care and interpretation
by Ilanka Cultural Center

 Artwork may be in any medium.

 Artwork may include outdoor installations.

 Replicas of artifacts or copies of original works will not be funded.

 Tribal preference however, artists residing outside of Alaska may be considered.

 No single piece of art may exceed $10,000 in price.

 Only visual art will be considered.

Submission Directions:

1 A high resolution digital photograph of each work offered for purchase. All photos
should be sent as jpg files at a minimum of 300dpi at 5X& inches (about 1500 x 2100
pixels. A resolutions of 8 x 10 (3000 x 2400 pixels) is preferred.,
1 Artwork information Please submit a title, date of completion, list of materials used, set
of dimensions (length, width, depth) exhibition history (if any) and price for each piece
offered.
1 A short biography for the artist: Please submit one paragraph describing the artist. It is
helpful to know where the artist is from, where they learned their craft, what mediums
they work in, where they have sold or shown work previously, and if they act as an arts
instructor.

Must be submitted to the cultural center by 5:00pm Friday, October 22, 2010.
