Working with children has always been second nature to me. Since I was a
teenager, I have always worked with younger children as a camp counsellor and leader.
I love the genuine enthusiasm, the imagination, the open-mindedness and the inquisitive
nature that children embody. I always bond well with them and I find them endearing
and full of life. I also have a strong belief in lifelong learning. The world is always
changing and humans are constantly adapting to new ideas and innovations. Humans
are continually learning and I believe that having a good education base is essential for a
lifelong learner. Hence, the teaching profession is the perfect choice for me.
The way that I teach is a result of this caring atmosphere that I create in my
classroom. I support the theory of multiple intelligences and believe that each child
learns differently. In every lesson, I try to cater to as many types of learning styles as
possible to make sure that I reach all of my students. I always have something visual,
something auditory, and something manipulative for my students. I use a lot of models
as well as theatrics to illustrate my lesson. I try to involve students in their learning by
getting them to experience hands-on and to participate in the activities. I urge them to
think critically by nurturing their inquisitive minds, encouraging questions and embracing
ideas. I give them opportunity to explore the main ideas of the lesson so they can
internalize the material. I care that my students are curious about the world and are
interested in learning.
I also believe that each student should be empowered to take responsibility for
their own learning. While I encourage children to hold on to their dreams and
aspirations, I also have them set realistic goals for themselves and give them step by
step guidelines on how to reach them. I let them self evaluate and reflect upon these
goals so that they can develop confidence in their learning. Furthermore, I always look
for input and feedback from my students when I am evaluating and assessing their
work. I try to make sure students know exactly how I evaluate them and the steps they
can take to achieve their academic goal. This way, they can take control of their
education and acquire the skill set to become lifelong learners.
I believe that a teacher can never learn enough, so I am always open to learn
new strategies and ways of teaching. My passion for children and for learning makes me
constantly strive to improve my practice.
