decades. More chronic health problem such as obesity, hypertension, heart disease
and lung cancer are on the rise, not only in Malaysia but also in other parts of the
world. What are the factors that have brought about this situation?

To begin with, unhealthy lifestyles such as lack of exercise and consuming foods
rich in calories and sugar results in obesity. Apart from that, smoking has
contributed significantly to the high number of lung cancers, as stated in reports, that
in every six seconds one person dies due to tobacco. Also, smoking affects the level
of productivity at the work place. Moreover, second-hand smoke that is inhaled by
non-smokers is even more detrimental to health as it cancer causing.

Another cause is the introduction of modern gadgets like computers with internet
connection, mobile phones, and televisions. The use of these gadgets minimizes

Type of essay: Exemplification Essay

Tourism is fast becoming a booming industry, especially in third world countries.

These countries offer a more natural and scenic environment that developed
countries cannot really present because of industrialization. Malaysia has benefited
much from tourism whereby many employment opportunities have been created as it

6
is a boon to the economy of the country.Tourism is more than just travelling as it
can bring economic and social benefit whereby it promotes racial unity and
harmony, creates higher level of health awareness and generates greater
income to those participating in the industry.

Firstly, tourism promotes racial unity and harmony. Being a multiracial country,
the different races and other minority ethnic groups have learnt to live together
despites the diverse differences in our ways of life. Our ability to work together has
not only strengthened our diversity but also helped us live in peace and harmony and
remained united as one nation. This special attachment has made tourism in
Malaysia a wonder to many foreigners, especially our diverse cultures and practice.
Local tourism has also encouraged Malaysians form all walks of life to travel
extensively and thus enrich our understanding of the local practices. For example,
visits to the various cultural heritage centres, Portuguese Settlement, fishing
village, orang asli settlements and the Iban’s longhouse have also helped
spread a better understanding and acceptance of the different lifestyle
practiced among Malaysians. Both local and foreign visitors get to learn exchange
ideas and understand the unique lifestyle of people of Borneo too. Hence, tourism
bridges the differences and promotes a more meaningful sense of unity among the
different races.

Secondly, tourism promotes a greater awareness of hygiene. It is an irrefutable

fact that a clean image not only adds to the attractiveness of tourist spot but also
influence tourist decision to return. For our country to receive an influx of tourists all
the year round remain competitive in this sector, a significant number of campaign
promoting cleaner eateries and public toilets have been carried out. The campaign
‘Malaysia Green and Clean’has to a certain extent increased awareness on the
importance of maintain the cleanliness of various tourist attractions among tour
agencies, Organisations, services providers, entrepreneurs and communities in
supply chains have collaborated and work towards providing a more pleasant
experience to visitors. Overall, the campaign has brought about a new level of
awareness of hygiene to all the stakeholders. In short, a greater level of hygiene has
not only changed people’s indifference attitude on the importance of a cleaner
surrounding but also enabled tourism in Malaysia to thrive and remain competitive
as the top travel destination among tourist

Thirdly, tourism brings in lucrative revenues to our nation. Tourism, our main
source of revenue, has for umpteen years created job opportunities, both through
direct employment within the tourism industry and indirectly in sectors such as retails
and transportation. To illustrate, hotels and other service-oriented establishments
like restaurants are set up to meet the ever increasing demand for services by both
local and foreign tourists. When unemployment rate is low, income level will rise and
this will lead to higher purchasing power among consumers and finally higher tax-
returns for the government. When tourist spend their earnings on goods and
services, it brings about the “ multiplier effects” creating more jobs, providing

7
opportunities for small-scale business enterprises in rural communities and
generating additional tax as well as service tax. Indeed, money spent by tourist
translates into profit and income for the employees, all stakeholders, the government
and industry players.
