Lesson Plan Professional Practice: Chelsea Morgan 21327253

Time: 9:55-10:57
Date: 14/09/2017 Year Level & Learning Area:
Room: Comp Lab
Year 7 Robotics
Topic:
Robotics- line following sensor and challenge

Curriculum links: Specific Objectives/Learning Goals:

 Build line sensor addition onto
Hardware components of a network robot
(ACTDIK023)  Create coding that will make
robots follow a line
General Capabilities:
 Make observations
 Numeracy
 Identify which part of coding
 literacy
makes the robot preform certain
actions/tasks
Preparation:
 Collect data using robot
 Turn projector on  Upload data to mindstorm
 Have trolly of robots and equiment out program and create a graph
 Make sure all robots are charged  Use prior knowledge on robot
 Have a copy of your lesson plan on hand program to complete challenge
 Have a copy of the roll on hand
 Program demo robot
 Lay mat 3 on table for line following
activity
 Lay maze mat on floor

Prior Learning: Resources/Materials required:

 Controlled movement  Wifi
 Precise turns  computers
 Gyro sensor  Mindstorm program
 Colour sensor  Robots
 Projector
 Robot mats
Lesson Steps
Time: Procedure
 Enter class
- Line students up at the bottom of the stairs in two lines.
5mins - Identify students that are doing the right thing and allow them to enter first
- Repeat instructions to the rest of the students that are not following
instructions.
- Follow students into the building and up the stairs
********************************************************************
 Take Roll

-ask students to roll their chairs to the front in a tight group

-conduct roll and mark off student’s names

3mins
-Ask students to raise their hands nice and high so that I can see them.

-Recap expectations: when I am speaking no one else should be speaking,

you are not to roll around the classroom in your chair, productive in class.

********************************************************************
 Introduce line following sensor
-Then next step in your mission is to use a line following sensor.
-Show the sensor and how it fits onto robot
-Describe how the sensor works
‘the sensor sends a beam of light down onto the mat. The light refractions tell the
robot where the line is. Once the robot is programed to move forward it will use
this light beam to follow the line until asked to stop.’
5 mins
Set expectation:
-today we will be attaching line sensor to our robots and creating codes in
mindstorm that will make our robots follow a line on mat 3.

Project on Power Point:

- “You will be creating the code shown on the board and uploading it to your
robot”
- “You need to pay close attentions to the circled icons to make sure they
match the demonstration code”
- “You will need to identify what each section of this program is doing”
Example. “As a class lets identify what the third section on the program is making
robot do. Does anyone have any idea ?”
Ans: The motor that is attached to port C is being turned on to a speed of 30.

********************************************************************
Demonstration
-“I have created and uploaded the program on the board onto my robot. Lets take
2mins a look as a class what happens”
-Gather students around mat 3. Start demonstration.
-“Okay, I have shown you the program and how it works. Its now your turn to do it
yourself. However, before you do I would like to talk to you about the maze mat.
*******************************************************************
Introduce maze mat
-“Some of you have taken notice of the maze mat on the floor. Students who can
show me that they have completed the line following section of Lego Mindstorm
program are able to move on to your final challenge for the term.”

-“The challenge is to first solve the maze puzzle. Once you have solved the maze
3mins you task is to create a program in Mindstorm that will guide your robot from start
to finish through the maze. You may use any sensors that you have learnt in
previous lessons. You may not draw on the maze mat itself. Once your robot
reaches the end of the maze you need to program it so that the lights flash and a
victory song is played!”

Manners reminder:
-“As always we only have one mat 3 and one maze mat, therefore we are going to
have to take turns. I suggest you work through the maze slowly add little by little
to your program each try”
*******************************************************************
Start Line following Practical
-“Okay lets get started on our line following activity. Please get into your partners-
34mins one person can collect your robot and equipment and the other can start up the
computer.”
*walk around room and observe progress*
-Once students are able to show that they have sufficiently completed their line
following activity, allow them to move onto the maze activity.
********************************************************************
Conclusion
10mins Teacher: “10 mins left. Please stop what you’re doing and save your work! Robots
need to be turned off and put back in their boxes. Computers need to be shut
down and your desks need to be clean. Please put your mouse and keyboard up.”
********************************************************************
Evaluation of Student Learning:
 Monitor student’s participation in classroom activities
 Monitor student’s questions during one on one interactions
 Monitor student’s responses to prompting questions
 Monitor which slide students are up to
Self-Evaluation/Reflection:
 Are the students engaged ?
 Are students being productive in class?
 How could you make your classes more interesting?
 Are you covering the curriculum?
 Do you have enough knowledge to teach your class? Or do you need to study up
more ?
