LXX Jonah

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amathi saying,

and he found a ship going to Tharsis and paid his fair

and a great wave came on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken

Raise up and call on to your God, so that the God might save us and we might not perish

And the men were in great fear and said to him: what is that you have done?
10 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας;

For the men knew that he he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he has told them
διότι ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄνδρες ὅτι ἐκ προσώπου κυρίου ἦν φεύγων, ὅτι ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς.

For the sea was going and the increased more against them

And they cried out to the Lord and said “by no means, Lord”

They sacrificed a sacrifice to the Lord and vowed vows

And the Lord commanded a great sea monster to swallow Jonas

and Jonas prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the sea monster

I cried out in my affliction to the Lord my God and He heard me

and proclaim in it according to the previous proclamation, which I spoke to you

Who knows if God will repent and turn way from the anger of his wrath and we may not perish?
9 Τίς οἶδεν εἰ μετανοήσει ὁ θεὸς καὶ ἀποστρέψει ἐξ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα;

And God saw their deeds, that they turned away from their evil ways

And God repented at the calamity, by which he spoke to do to them, and he did not do it.
καὶ μετενόησεν ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ, ᾗ ἐλάλησεν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς, καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησεν.

Jonas was in great grief and was confused


4:1 Καὶ ἐλυπήθη Ιωνας λύπην μεγάλην καὶ συνεχύθη.

Oh Lord, were these not my words while I was still in my land

καὶ ἀνέβη ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς τοῦ Ιωνα τοῦ εἶναι σκιὰν

9 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Ιωναν Εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σὺ ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ;

10 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος Σὺ ἐφείσω ὑπὲρ τῆς κολοκύνθης, ὑπὲρ ἧς οὐκ ἐκακοπάθησας ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν

And you did not nourish it, which came into being towards nightfall and perished towards nightfall

And I will not have consideration for the great city of Niniveh
11 ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ φείσομαι ὑπὲρ Νινευη τῆς πόλεως τῆς μεγάλης,
