STANDARD 1, PART I

Student Teaching Evaluation of Performance (STEP) is the process for preparing and implementing a unit of instruction.

By understanding the community and school environment and the makeup of the classroom, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your
students. In the first two weeks of student teaching, you should focus on learning about the students you will be working with. You are expected to teach the
unit you are preparing by the end of week 8.

Review the geographic, district, and school demographics of your student teaching classroom. Utilize the district or school website, your cooperating
teacher/mentor, or school administrator for this information. You may also use your state Department of Education website for statistical data on community

Suitland Elementary is a school that has limited resources. The community is comprised of low-income families, and some can barely afford the materials that needed for
school. 83 percent of students come from a low-income family (GreaSchools, 2018) This causes a problem when planning and delivering a lesson. Without the proper resources,
how can a teacher plan lesson? Teachers are given limited resources such as paper and would sometimes have to provide materials such as a notebook and pencil to their
students using their own money. Furthermore, parental involvement is scarce. Sometimes homework is not completed, and lessons are not reviewed or reinforced at home. This
makes for low scores doing assessments.

Being such a big district put a financial strain on the school district. With so many schools and students needing resources, it is no surprise that teachers often time must use
their own money to pay for classroom resources. Lack of funds and resources forces teachers to be creative in how they plan and deliver their lesson. A lot of resources are

Suitland Elementary serves 532 students. Out of the 532 students, 83 percent of them come from a low-income family, and 68.22 percent of them receive free or reduced-price
lunch. The school's lack of funding prevents students from succeeding due to lack of resources. According to GreatSchool.org, students at Suitland Elementary school is falling
far behind other students in the state and due to that may have significant achievement gaps. Teachers at the school will need more planning and resources to help these
students excel. However, due to low budgets, teachers lack the resources which then will affect assessments.
