Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address Universal
Design for Learning principles to extend and support the learning experiences for all
students.
This project will address Universal Design for Learning principles by allowing the
students to use a variety of resources to gather information whether digital or print. For
some students digital resources will be more beneficial because the online articles can
have text-to-speech software applied to them for students who have difficulty reading.
Students who have underdeveloped fine motor skills will be able to dictate to the teacher
what he or she would like to have on his or her timeline. Students may also use an
alternative keyboard or computer mouse. If needed students may also create their
timelines on paper if they have trouble typing and using a computer mouse.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the project to the students to name some famous or
historical figures they may be familiar with. Then the teacher will briefly introduce each
historical figure that is listed in the standard and show the students an image of each
historical figure. Then the students will be told that they will create a timeline using
ReadWriteThink’s interactive timeline that details important events about the historical
figure he or she chooses. Students will be able to use print and online resources to
gather information about the historical figure they each choose.
This project will take about three days to complete as the students will two days to
research and one day to construct their timeline. The student’s learning will be assessed
by the teacher reviewing each student’s timeline and assessing the timeline’s minimum
event requirement and the relevancy and significance of the events the students chose
to include. The students will be given feedback about their timelines face to face by the
teacher and they will be informed of any improvements they need to make. Lastly, the
students will print their timelines and get into groups with students who picked different
historical figures and they will share out their information about the historical figure they
chose.
Reflective Practice: In order to extend the lesson to a higher LoTi level the teacher
could share the students’ historical timelines on the classroom blog. The students could
also create a Discovery Ed interactive board about their historical figure to share out
more information to their classmates that include online resources where they gathered
their information and educational videos.
