SIN's ressources and data
=========================

SIN collect a lot of data. For the first 2 years, the data were kept to online use.
To evolve and to help more users, we are now
starting to release our data for offline use. This will allow users to continue to
use SIN even when internet connection is not
available or when Tor/I2P can't be used. Using Bit Torrent Sync to get the data, it
will also allow users to remain up-to-date as
soon as the user is online.

Using BT Sync
=============

In this section, you'll be able to learn how to use BT Sync to download and share
SIN's Library. 2 methods will be
covered. The first one will be the anonymous way and the second method will be
without anonymity.

Notice: The non-anonymous way is the one that will provide faster syncing speed and
will help the most. We understand that some
users might not be able to share outside of Tor. Please be select your
favorite way to sync, but if you are able and
feel safe to do so, please sync without anonimity.

Using BT Sync ANONYMOUSLY

-------------------------

1. You'll need to download, verify and setup Whonix. Whonix is an operating

system focused on anonymity, privacy and
security. It's based on the Tor anonymity network, Debian GNU/Linux and
security by isolation. DNS leaks are impossible,
and not even malware with root privileges can find out the user's real IP.

Whonix consists of two parts: One solely runs Tor and acts as a gateway,
which we call Whonix-Gateway. The other, which
we call Whonix-Workstation, is on a completely isolated network. Only
connections through Tor are possible.

To download, get to the download page and follow instructions on how to setup
Whonix and virtual machine software:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Download#First_time_user.3F

2. Once the gateway and the workstation are up and running, get on the
workstation to add BTSync repos. We recommend this
one-linner: sh -c "$(curl -fsSL http://debian.yeasoft.net/add-btsync-
repository.sh)"

3. When repos is added, you can install BTSync with GUI or with web interface.
Run this command:
sudo apt-get install btsync-gui
OR
sudo apt-get install btsync

4. After the installation, run btsync GUI or web interface

(http://localhost:8888) and configure everything to your tastes.

5. You can now add a SIN's secrets, using the top right gear icon and selecting
'Enter a key'.
Then select a folder to put all the files.

6. Edit the folder you just added to ensure that the following items are
checked:
Use relay server, Use tracker server, Search LAN.
All others parameters are up to you, but 'search DHT network' may help you
find more users.

7. As you see, even after an hour or so, you might not be able to connect to any
peers (except the ones that do not use Tor
to protect themselves). To allow you to access every peers, get to
http://www.vpngate.net.
Select a VPN in a country of your choice that support OpenVPN + TCP
connection and click "OpenVPN Config file".
Then scroll down to "The .ovpn file which is including IP address" and select
the TCP file.

8. Inside a terminal window, get to the folder where you downloaded the .ovpn
file using CD and DIR to help you. Then run
this command: sudo openvpn <name_of_the_openvpn_conf_file.ovpn>
Enter your user password if prompted. You should now see a connection being
established to the VPN.

9. Keep the terminal open to remain connected to VPN, when you are done, press
CTRL+C or close the terminal to shut the VPN.

10. Take a drink and enjoy while you are syncing the whole SIN's data.

Once the VPN is connected, you should find peers in the next 15minutes. It may
takes a while (few hours) prior any transfert
starts (we are investigating it). Transfert speed are low, but should go up after
more people join the sharing pool.

Note on VPN: VPN are usually fail-open. This mean that is VPN goes down,
traffic will be routed over internet directly
outside the VPN. On Whonix, traffic will go out over Tor so you are
still protected by Tor, but BTSync won't work.
Also, please see the note on Tor below.

Note on Tor: Tor is not working in certain country like China. So when
selecting your VPN, please keep in mind that you are
connecting over Tor and that connection might be blocked.

Note on Whonix: When you have a VPN connection, you will be notified by Whonix-
check that it can't reach the TransPort. It is
normal and you do not have to be worried about it. If you shut the VPN
and re-run Whonix-Check, you'll see the
error gone.

Security: This is for now the safest know method to run BT Sync over Tor. BT Sync
now allow SOCK5 proxy, but since BTS
requires the use of UDP for now, it can't be just proxied over Tor.

Security #2: The workstation used to SYNC the Library should not be used for
something else. The VPN will route all traffic
not stream isolated over the VPN and it could bring to possible leaks
of information.

Using BT Sync without anonymity

-------------------------------

This is off course the simpliest way to do it. It gives you no real identity
protection, but it makes the download and share
of the Library faster for everyone. It also allows VPN users to establish
connection in a more easy way. However, if you do not
put your deepweb nickname as the BTSync device name or you do not tell someone your
device name, it is virtually impossible for
someone to link your IP or identity with your deepweb identity.

SIN's secret codes are already shared over internet on multiple pastebin like
website, so a deepweb access is not mandatory
to find out about the secret code.

NOTICE: Lot of people will not understand why a user would like to
download/share this way, but some users already do and it
provide better speed to new comers and especially to VPN users.

1. Go to BT Sync website and download it: http://www.getsync.com/

2. Install BT Sync.

3. You can now add a SIN's secret, using the top right gear icon and selecting
'Enter a key'.
Then select a folder to put all the files.

4. Take a drink and enjoy while you are syncing the whole SIN's Library.
