Lesson Idea Name: E-Books on the changes in science.

Content Area: Changes in Science
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed:
S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the differences between a physical change
and a chemical change.
a. Plan and carry out investigations of physical changes by manipulating, separating and mixing dry and liquid
materials.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others. Students: a. plan and employ
effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative
pursuits.

Selected Technology Tool:

Microsoft PowerPoint, E- Books

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): All students will obtain the ability to create their e-books. The class will
conduct experiments together, then branch off to create their own e-books. if a child requires more time than
others, that adjustment can be made. Every child can create an e-book, the amount of detail can also help
adjust the lesson for other students.

Lesson idea implementation: The purpose of the lesson is to build a solid understanding of physical and
chemical changes. This will be reached by the class conducting experiments/ observations together to build an
understanding on what each change is. The students will take notes and write descriptions for each. After this
is done the students will review their notes and pick three physical and three chemical changes that we
observed as a class. They will then move to the computers to work on their e books.
By using the computers, the children will have the ability to access pictures and addition information that can
help them gain a deeper understanding. In total the student will have nine slides. One title page, one
explanation page (difference between chemical and physical change), three chemical change pages and three
physical change pages followed by a conclusion page. Once completed the children will record their voices
over the page and publish it. The teacher will then post the eBooks to the class blog for parents and relatives
to view.

Reflective Practice: The lesson can be enhanced by allowing the children to research and or conduct the
experiments on their own. Then use their own findings to create the book. The lesson could also be enhanced
by extending the amount of explanation that is required. Rather than one page per change, they could use two
and describe in greater detail the events of the change. Finally, the students could work together and video
the experiments then add the video into the eBook. Creating a much more in-depth book.
