Squaring the circle

Squaring the circle
Manuel Velandia is one of those people who instantly catches you because of his energy, his
vision of life and ability to work. With a restless and adventurous spirit, has been living a few
years in Alicante, where he arrived from his native Colombia, and it is in these lands where he
has performed and found a world matching the height of his creativity.
Extensively trained, Manuel deploys his activity in various disciplines. Degree in Sociology, MA
in education, two PhD’s , teacher, fighter for sexual rights, social networking user, blogger, poet,
media partner, interested in culture and passionate about the arts... Engraving and
photography are the focus of their creativity.
The invention of photography technic and the possibility of obtaining lasting images over
time has been one of the greatest scientific advances. On one hand, it changes the way of
telling stories and on the other, contributes to shift the framing and artistic compositions. This
is a significant step in the art and a push toward modernity. You do not need to resort to
painting to perpetuate an event. From the first images, available to only a few, to the present,
with photography to everyone, finding the time, the scene, the instant, the moment of
immediacy... has been constant.
Photography has gone from a trade to be part of the great museums and collections. From
the photographer who went through the villages taking pictures, to the great artistic
photographers or those who use photography as an artistic resource. The advance of the
daguerreotype to analog photography and, from this, to digital, is one of the greatest t
echnological advances of recent decades. It is precisely the square format digital photos
(21.59 x 21.59 cm) obtained with the mobile phone, modified and published on Instagram,
which nourish this sample.
9
There are various photographic series in which Manuel Velandia is working at the same
time, and also various themes in which he moves, covering from the portrait, marine images,
nature, self-portrait, architecture ... Specially interested on the study of human proportions
based on the proportions of the Vitruvian Man and the Canon of human proportions by
Leonardo da Vinci.
This series “Squaring the circle” was born with some very interesting images of metallic
elements found in coastal breakwaters, eroded by the marine salt, which offer nuances
and unique colors. Later, Manuel photographied geometric architectural elements, in
images that recreate buildings included within the Alicante rationalism of the sixties and
seventies, and then he moves to obtain images of details at the Tram stations.
From these images, the photographer starts the creative and editing process. Stairs,
railings, fences and other architectural elements are twisted into a spiral, into a
geometric figure that develops from a central point and spinning around, going farther
from the center. While also moving away from the first image obtained in a deliberate
desire of the author for visual manipulation and deception, with a disturbing, surprising
result of enormous plasticity, being the viewer who interprets the pictures.
The spiral has been used since the megalithic era as a symbol to represent the sun, but
also can be found in some elements of nature, as in some seashells, or has been
interpreted as the cyclical thought of birth, death and rebirth. In this case, the spiral is
inserted into a square format. Is it a delibe rate choice by Manuel Velandia of this
geometric figure? Again, the author leaves the reader and the viewer to draw their own
conclusions, because we must not forget that the main function of art -and in this case,
photography- is to convey emotions and feelings, but also leave a clear path to the
imagination.

Los orígenes del Proyecto
Squaring the circle
the circle.
