Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
Students will have the opportunity to choose one of the following historical figures: Benjamin Franklin,
Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea, Theodore Roosevelt, George
Washington Carver, or Ruby Bridges. Once they chose a historical figure, they will conduct research on their
selected person. They can use the internet or read books based on their person to learn information about
their lives.
Once they have enough information gathered, they will be instructed to complete a timeline graphic
organizer that will help them layout all of the information, events, and dates that occurred in that person’s
life. Once they finish this, they will choose 6-10 of the events that they think are most important to put in
their online timeline. They will then login to the computer and go to
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/timeline_2/
They will put in the dates and information on the event and add photos. Once all students are finished, each
student will share their timeline with the class and we will post them on our class website.
This lesson will take 45-60 minutes over 3 days to complete. The first day the students will research their
person. The second day they will complete the graphic organizer and complete any additional research they
need. The third day they will put their information into the interactive online Timeline. Student learning will
be assessed based on the final product they produce (the online Timeline) using a rubric. I will provide the
students with feedback via the rubric and written notes.

Reflective Practice:
After the students finish their timelines and present, I will post them all to our classroom blog so that the
students will always have access to their timeline and the ones their peers created to refer to and study. This
will benefit students who may be absent when we are covering a certain historical person and they can read
and look at the timeline to learn about that person so they aren’t behind.
