Lesson Plan Format


Teacher: Melissa Scherer
Grade: K
Content Area: Writing (25 minutes)

1. Content and Standards: List standards that are aligned with the content, the text,
and materials. (These should be listed with your curriculum and standards
documents.)
a. CC.1.3 K.D Name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of
each in telling the story.
b. CC.1.3 K.G Make connections between the illustrations and the text in a story
(read or read aloud).
c. CC.1.2.K.G Answer questions to describe the relationship between
illustrations and the text in which they appear.
d. CC.1.2.K.L Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and
understanding.
e. CC.1.4.K.A Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
informative/ explanatory texts.
f. CC.1.1.K.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in
decoding words.

2. Prerequisites: State what students should know prior to this lesson.


a. Students should be able to listen and follow directions.
b. Students should be able to draw or color in the lines.
c. Students should be able to identify beginning letter sounds.

3. Essential Questions: List essential questions (Usually, this is in your curriculum


documents.)

How does a picture tell a story?

4. Materials and Equipment: List all materials and equipment to be used by the teacher
and students. Tell how they will be used to meet the objective.

 Book: Leaf Man by Lois Ehlet


 Worksheet created that had a place for student to place leaf and draw seen
along with a place to write where they landed.
 Construction paper leaves in a variety of shapes and colors
 Pencils
 Crayons
 Glue sticks
5. Instructional Objective: State what students will know and be able to do at the end
of this lesson. Fill in the blanks:

 For students to provide an illustration with at least 3 colors, a larger than palm
size drawing with many details for readers to understand the story without
using words.

6. Instructional Procedures: List instructional strategies and learning experiences that


are in alignment with the objective(s). Include information about what teaching
strategies you will use to engage students. Include information about what type of
technology, manipulatives, etc. you will use to facilitate students meeting the
objectives.

 Before: Anticipatory set, minilesson


a. Students will be seated on the floor in their special spots
b. Asked students “What is an illustrator”?
i. Select up to 4 students to answer
c. Show the students the book the Leaf Man and tell the students that the
Author is the illustrator for this book.
i. Ask students what is in the illustration on the front cover of the
book?
1. Have student count the colors that are in the picture?
2. Ask Students if the picture is larger than the palm of my
hand
3. Does the Illustrator provide details to the picture?
ii. See if they can identify the hidden picture?
1. Have students think/pair/share to see if they can identify
the hidden picture.
d. Read the story Leaf Man
i. Provide students time to see each picture and see if they can
identify the hidden pictures.
ii. At the end of the book have students discuss with a partner what
animals were in the book and which one is their favorite.

 During: Group work, independent practice


Independent work – Where would you land if you were a leaf?

a. Before having students return to their desk they get to choose a leaf that
they want to incorporate into their writing.
b. Students are to create their own leaf man and illustrate a background for
where he landed
c. Students need to identify the beginning letter of the place their Leaf Man
entered along with stretching out the following letters to see if they can
identify them by letter sound.
 After: Closure, assessment
a. Ask students “Why is adding detail to drawings so important?” to see how
they will answer the question now that the lesson is over.

b. Student Leaf Man Illustration


i. Student must have 3 colors, larger than the students palm, and
that there is detail showing the location of the leaf.
ii. Look to see if students can at least identify beginning sound of the
location

7. Assessment: Tell how you will know if all students have met the instructional
objective. What tool(s) will you use to measure if all students can meet the
objective?
a. Teacher will collect all Leaf Man Illustrations from students to make sure that
students have
i. Pictures that contain at least 3 colors
ii. Picture is at least the size of palm of hand
iii. the picture provides details on where the leaf has landed.
iv. The beginning letter sound of their location is written on space
provided.
b. All Pictures will be hung on the bulletin board.

Differentiated Instruction: Tell how you will meet the needs of all learners during the lesson.
This has to be in alignment with the objective. Look back at the objective and think about how
you can support the learners in this lesson. Will you differentiate content, process, and/or
product? Will you make it more challenging or do you have students that need support in
meeting the objectives

 The Leaf Man will be put together by an aide or teacher based on the
student’s choices
 Teacher or Aide will write the location for the student
