Copy todays topic and answer:
- “ Persistence is what makes the impossible possible, the possible likely, and the likely definite.”

Persisting puzzle (Hidden squares)

Exploration: Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing.
Students will watch a variety of videos and read a poem.

Students will watch Michael Jordan “Failure”, Students will answer questions then class will discuss.
Students will watch Adidas “Unstoppable”, Students will answer questions then class will discuss.
Students will watch Castaway clip, Students will answer questions then class will discuss.

Class will read poem together. Class will annotate as they read. Students will answer questions based on the
poem.

Explanation: Describe how students will make sense of their exploration.

After each video clip, students will reflect by responding to the following reflection questions. Class will discuss
their answers after a silent writing period.

Ø What does it mean to be unstoppable?
Ø What daily challenges try to get in your way or stop you from being successful?
Ø What do you do when these challenges get in your way?
Ø In what ways was he persistent?
Ø How did persistence pay off?
Ø What would have happened if he had not persistent?

Elaboration: Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding.

1. Relate some stories from your own experience about when you didn’t quit? What were the outcomes?

2. What is the meaning of “Success is failure turned inside out—”?

3. How could you help yourself and others remember the advice in this poem?

4. When would this advice be important to you in growing up or getting older?
