CONFIGURATION OF MTL RECEIVER AND TRANSMITTER

The below describes in brief about the method the method of configuration of mux receiver and
transmitter in case of a fault or to change the range of the t/c. It should be noted that once the mux is
connected to the PC or the hand held communicator it stops communicating with the DCS and hence all
the temperatures measured by the particular receiver show wrong or bad value. Hence proper action i.e
. informing of production department is a must for their necessary action. Also before proceeding
further please have in hand the input channel allocations of the particular mux since the mux does not
maintain any data regarding the tag name etc.

There are two ways of checking the mux configuration one is through the pc which has the pcs80
software installed in it and has a serial port configured in it and the next method is through the hand
held communicator of MTL. We first discuss about the method of configuring through the PC.

1) First of all switch off power to the required mux and then short the terminal 4,5 ( mode and com )
this is on the left hand side top after this connect the RS232 cable to the terminals specified on the
cables i.e 27,28,30 after the above is done power up the mux.
2) On your pc in command i.e in msdos prompt mode , if pc is on windows environment the n
shutdown and restart in msdos mode.
3) Change to mux directory i.e. c:\mux
4) On changing to mux directory type c:\mux\mtlmod

Enter the mux configuration menu , using the arrow keys select the yes option and press enter , then
we get an information that the uploading is going on . if all the connections are correct and the serial
port configuration is correct then you will go to the next screen else the system will indicate RS-232
time out , on receiving the message check all connections and again upload the data using the upload
data option in the page or if the communication is established then go to configure Rx (use this option
only when you want to change the parameters of the receiver )and press enter (All changes done are
automatically downloaded ).

The manipulation in the screen is done using the arrow keys ,

1) Select the data format and press enter a pull down menu appears in the menu select 16 bit 2s
comp and if number of transmitter used are 2 in nos select no of Tx .And enter 2 .
2) Address h/s option is selected as hardware or software depending on the dip switches in the
receiver.
3) Address link is set as 1 for both A and B if there are two transmitters in use or only address
link A set to 1.
4) Com selection is set as hardware or software depending on your requirements and on the dip
settings .
5) The baud rate is set at 9600 , 8 bit data ,1 stop bit , no parity , mode is set to RTU.

PRESS ESC TO EXIT THE SCREEN

To configure the transmitter select configure Tx ( this option is used to check or change the ranges ).
It contains the following option

1) Tx no = The no of transmitters used

2) Tx type = 831 B
3) Channel no =Select the channel no
4) I/P type = using enter key and arrow keys select the input type ie k-type,or R - type
5) Safety type =as per requirement here it is down scale
6) Input zero =must be set to 0
7) Calc scalings =on selection the below page appears
8) Input zero =lower limit of T/C
9) Input fsd =upper limit of T/C
10) Output zero =0
11) Output fsd =8000

After the above changes are done and you are satisfied , then press ESC to come to previous page.
It should be noticed that once you escape to previous page and view the contents of calc scaling
page , you will find that all previous values have been modified . This
is a feature of MTL receiver , no matter whatever the range entered , it will automatically set it
to 0 -100 0c range and the output fsd is changed accordingly.

For example ,
Input zero = 200
Output zero = 0
Output fsd = 8000
The mux receiver will calculater on the above data, and the new data obtained is as follows ,
Input zero = 0
Input fasd = 100
Output zero = 0
Output fsd = (8000/(input fsd / 100) = 4000
Note: - in order to check the range to which the particular channel is set the following calculations
are need to be done.
1) note the gain
2) range = 8000/ gain

the above is a example for one channel only , the procedure is the same for different channels.

Gain factor = output fsd /input fsd

After all required changes are done , the data is to be downloaded using the down load option
in page 1, after successful downloading of data remove the link between terminals 4 & 5 , then
select the signoff option and press enter , the mux goes from good condition to bad and switches
back to normal position . Remove the RS -232 cable connections from the mux receiver
Please check whether the temperature indications of the particular receiver are in good status in
the DCS.
