Cargo Handling Room Simulator

VLCC Single Hull

Model Description
Our VLCC single hull model is based on a real single
hull vessel. It includes four load/discharge lines,
pumps with vacuum strip as well as one ejector and
a stripping pump. A separate ballast pump is fitted.
Inert gas is made from flue gas, and run through
a scrubber. The cargo temperature and density can
be set individually. Water and sediments will fall
out over time. Tank atmosphere data is calculated
continuously

VLCC tankers today

The implementation of OPA 90 (Oil Pollution Act
of 1990) caused a major change in the design of
VLCC’s. OPA 90 requires that all Crude Oil Carriers
entering US waters shall have a protective, double “Better training
hull construction. Consequently, single hull VLCC’s with single hull!”
are being replaced by modern double hull vessels.
In the new generation VLCC’s, cargo tanks are no Vessel’s Main Particulars
longer used for ballast, since the ballast is carried in Tonnage 187,997 GRT
the double hull skin. Today, 18 years after OPA 90 Length overall 305.00 m
was implemented, there are still crude oil tankers Length bpp 295.00 m
of the old single hull construction trading. An officer

not competent to load and discharge cargo of the Draught moulded 30.40
much more complex single hull vessels, which are Summer draught 19.07 m
carrying both ballast and cargo at the same time Vessel Details
in the same tank/pipe system. On the other hand, Cargo tanks 14 - 2 are SLOP’s
personnel trained in the operations of single hull Ballast tanks 3 WT3 p/s and FPT

STCW requirements
The VLCC single hull model meets the requirements Stripping ejector 1500m3/h
of STCW section A-II/1, A-II/2, A-II/3, A-III/1, Stripping pump 350m3/h
A-III/2 and A-V/1 that states the requirements for Cargo main line size 650 mm

the voyage and
unloading of
cargoes as well
as maintaining
seaworthiness
of the ship
regarding trim,
stability and
stress.

Training level
The simulator is suited for the following training:
• Junior officers in basic cargo operations.
• Senior officers in full-scale cargo operation
(loading/discharging/tank cleaning/venting).
• Senior officers and Captains in advanced cargo
handling operations.

Training objectives
The training objective of this model is to understand
the total cargo handling operation. Specific training
objectives include:
• Familiarisation with all parts of the cargo system.
• Planning of a cargo loading or discharge operation
with the use of the Data Load load computer.
• Lining up for loading and ballast handling

simultaneously (check atmosphere).
• Stripping of final remains of a tank either by using the
vacuum strip or the ejector/stripping pump.
• Controlling the flow into each tank and the trim/ list
of the ship.
• Topping up and finalising loading.
• Preparing and lining up for discharge including Inert
Gas plant.
• Starting up discharge with one or more Crude Oil
Pumps by the use of pump diagram (included in the
model).
• Crude Oil Washing (setting of correct pressure and
wash angles).
• After emptying the tanks planned for ballast, starting
ballasting over deck.
• Emptying and draining of final tanks. Finalising
departure ballast.
• Tank cleaning and changeover of ballast. Picture MD 122 Center Tank 1 Condition
• Line flushing and preparation for arrival in load port.
• Venting of tanks for inspection/docking with the use
of explosion diagram for each tank (included in the
model).

DNV Certification
The VLCC model became
certified by Det Norske
Veritas in January 2008 after
their latest Class A-Standard
for Certification of Maritime
Simulators No. 2.14 October
2007. This is based on
requirements in the STCW
Convention, regulation I/12.

used for training and assessment of competence. Any on Standard for Certification of Maritime Simulators
simulator need to meet the STCW A-I/12 No. 2.14 October 2007.
