PFD: PROCESS FLOW DIAGRAM

Who Prepares It?

PFD is prepared by the licenser in case when the project is not a LSTK project. In case of
open art and cases when company is itself the Licensor then it is prepared by the company
itself.
Parts of PFD
1. Major Equipment: Major equipment like a separation vessel, column, heat exchangers,
controllers (Level controller, Temperature controller, Pressure controller)
2. Dark Solid Lines: These lines depict the flow of major streams.
3. Light Solid Lines: These depict side streams.
4. Dashed Lines : These depict signal from controllers.
5. Stream numbers: Each stream has a stream number which is mentioned at the side of
the stream. Streams which inter the system at irregular intervals do not have stream
numbers.

Uses of PFD
1. It gives the sequence in which major equipment are placed.
2. It gives information about the flow of major streams.
3. It gives information about the location of major control valves.
4. It contains Stream numbers which could be used for knowing the process conditions
from HMB.
5. It is used for the preparation of P&ID.
6. It gives the overview of Process Description in a unit.
