Case: Implementation of Smart Transportation System

According to Wikipedia, An intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an advanced
application which, without embodying intelligence as such, aims to provide innovative
services relating to different modes of transports and traffic management and enable users to
be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, 'smarter' use of transport networks and
to process and share information which can prevent potential problems, keep traffic moving,
and decrease the negative environmental impacts of the transportation sector on society.
Below is some analysis of the factors included in access, capability and opportunity and how
to build them in the case of the implementation of smart transportation system, especially in
Indonesia.
1. Access
Access is defined as the reachability or mastery of important elements that determine a
success. According to the group analysis, there are several things that are included as factors
of access, as follows:
a. Availability of hardware and smart transportation technology
b. Availability of smart transportation application to enable the user or the customers
utilize the system
c. Availability of the power sources and energy sources
d. Availability of smart transportation help services
e. Availability of infrastructure and network support throughout the implementation area
f. Data center availability, to store all data and information in the system
g. Availability of a good system management
Next, here is how to build the access.
a. Prepare the human resources who are capable to develop and maintain the system
b. Prepare the environment to implement the system
c. Prepare the facilities to build a data center
d. Prepare the human resources who has knowledge of management

Capability is defined as everything related to the ability to use important elements that
are mastered to achieve goals. According to the results of the group analysis, there are several
things that are included as a capability factor before implementing the smart transportation
system, as follows:
a. Community readiness to operate smart transportation system
b. Human resources readiness to develop and maintain smart transportation system
c. Readiness for information and training dissemination related to smart transportation
system
d. Government readiness to implement technology on roads and vehicles
e. Support for policies or regulations related to the smart transportation system
Next, the only way to build a capability is by ensuring that all stakeholders have sufficient
knowledge to implement a smart system, so that they can support everything needed.

3. Opportunity
There are several opportunities that appear in implementing smart transportation system:
a. Reduce traffic jam with transportation and vehicle management and time efficiency
using real-time and fast automation systems
b. Enables fuel efficiency by developing the shortest path direction to reach the
destination (guidance and control system)
c. Allows easy transactions and payments in roads and tolls
d. Allows another field opportunity, such as economic and improvements in human
resources
e. Enable a better environment of living, by reducing the pollution and utilizing the new
source of energy
f. Control and monitor the traffic flows by providing the fast and accurate traffic
information to the driver
g. Blind crossing the route without collision
h. Prevention of traffic collision at the corner street
i. To develop a system to find the closest fuel station, restaurant, hotel, etc.
In general, there are a lot of opportunities provided if the smart transportation system
is applied to a city. The opportunities that arise are the opportunities to make human activities
easier, especially in the field of transportation. Besides, implementing smart transportation
system can also provide new benefits in other field.
