(DYNAMICS: NEWTON’S LAW OF MOTION)

1. State Newton’s First Law of Motion. Give an example of the application of Newton’s
First Law.

2. Define Newton’s Thirds Law and give an example of this law.

Figure 1 shows a force, F = 450 N pushing on a static 30 kg box to accelerate it with
0.67ms-2. Calculate the friction force acting on the box. (Ans: f =204.90N)

Shahrin pulled a book of mass 2 kg along a rough floor by a force 10 N at 30⁰ above the
horizontal as shown in Figure 2 . The flooe exerts a 2 N frictional force on the book.

Figure 4 shows a 5.0 kg block being pulled along a horizontal surface by a force, F =
35.0 N to the right. The surface is rough with a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.34.
a) Sketch a free body diagram showing all the forces acting on the block.
b) Compute the frictional force experienced by the block. [Ans: f= 16.68 N]
c) Compute the acceleration of the block. [Ans: a= 3.66 ms-2]

Figure 5 shows a force, F= 15.0 N applied on a 0.75 kg block at rest on a frictionless
surface.
a) Draw a free body diagram to show all the forces acting on the block.

Two blocks A and B of masses 2 kg and 3 kg on a smooth frictionless surface are
connected by a string as shown in Figure 6. They are pulled to the right by a horizontal
force, F. The system accelerates at 1 ms-2. (Ans: F= 5 N ;T= 2N)
a) Identify all horizontal forces that act on the block A and B. Label and name the
forces.
b) Calculate the magnitude of F.
c) Calculate the tension in the string.

9. A 10 kg block is connected to a 40 kg block as shown in Figure 7. The surface on that


the blocks slide is frictionless. A force of 50 N pulls the blocks to the right. [Ans: a= 1.00
ms-2 , T = 10 N]

a) Draw a free-body diagram for each block and label all the forces acting on it.
b) Find the magnitude of the acceleration of the 40 kg block.
c) Find the magnitude of the tension T in the rope that connects the two blocks.

shown in Figure 8. The coefficient of kinetic friction between blocks and the table is μ k

acceleration of the objects and the tension in the string.

The block shown in Figure 10 has mass 3500 g and lies on a plane which tilted at an
angle θ= 22° to the horizontal. The effective coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.20.
Determine the acceleration of the block as it slides down the plane. (Ans: a = 1.86 ms-2

Figure 11 shows a string attached to a 15 kg object on an inclined plane. Determine the
tension, T exerted on the string where the coefficient of static friction is 0.30.(Ans: T
=27.47 N)

Figure 12 shows two boxes connected by a cord running over a frictionless pulley. The
box Y moves down while box Z moves up after the system is released. Ignore the
friction and masses of the pulley. [Ans: a= 1.73ms-2; T =80.79 N)
a) Draw a free body diagram for each box by showing the tension exerted by the cord
and the force of gravity.
b) Find the acceleration, a, of the system and the tension, T, in the cord when mass
of box Y and Z are 7 kg and 10 kg respectively.

Objects A and B are of masses 1.5 kg and 2.0 kg respectively. They are connected in
the manner as shown in Figure 14 with A on a rough horizontal table. The objects are

a) Draw the free body force diagrams foe each object.
b) Determine the friction force between A and the table.
c) Determine the coefficient of the kinetic friction between A and the table.

Figure 15 shows a pulley system which consist 8 kg box Y hanging over a frictionless
pulley and 12 kg wooden block X placed on a rough table surface. Both boxes are
connected by a cord running over frictionless pulley. The friction force between box X
and the table is 10 N. Ignore the mass of the cord and the pulley. (Ans: a = 3.42 ms-2, T
=51.088 N)
a) Draw a free body diagram for each box by showing the tension exerted by the
cord, force of gravity, any normal force and friction force.
b) Find the acceleration of the system.
c) Find the tension of the cord.

Figure 16 shows two boxes connected by a cord running over a frictionless pulley. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between box A and table is 0.2. As box B moves down, box
A moves to the right. (Ans: a=1.962 ms-2 , T = 23.544 N )
a) Draw a free-body diagram for each box, showing the force of gravity, the tension
force, any normal force anf friction force.
b) Apply Newton’s second law to find the acceleration, a, of the system and the
tension, T, in the cord.

A box weighing 400 N is pushed horizontally across the floor of a room by a force 900 N
as shown in Figure 17. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the floor
os 0.56, find the acceleration of the box.(Ans: a = 16.58 ms-2)
