Relationship of Vapor Pressure Pressure to Temperature: Developing the Clausius-Clayperon Equation

1. Type in the temperature and vapor pressure data for carbontetrachloride (columns 1 and 2) into Excel
spreadsheet as seen below. Don’t forget to label the top cell in each column and include that cell when you
plot the data.

T (oC) VP (Torr) T in K 1/T in K VP (Torr) ln (Vapor Pressure)

-18.0 11.3 11.3
-8.0 21.0 21.0
2.0 36.8 36.8
12.0 61.5 61.5
22.0 99.0 99.0
27.0 123.8 123.8

2. (A) Make column 3 by converting the temperature in column 1 into Kelvins

(B) Make column 4 by taking the inverse of the temperature in K (1/T).
(C) Copy column 2 into column 5.
(D) Make column 6 by taking the natural logarithm (ln) of the VP in Torr. (column 5)

3. You will be making a series of XY scatter plots. Temperature in some form will be the x axis and Vapor
Pressure in some form will be the y axis. The goal is to find a mathematical relationship between the x and y
data. In chemistry we like straight lines. If the plot yields a straight line then the equation: y = mx + b
can be used. Make sure that you add a trendline and display the equation on the chart. Also display the R2
value on the chart. The closer the value of R2 is to exactly 1, the better the fit. Save and Print out the
spreadsheet as well as each plot.
(A) Plot VP vs T in K. Add a trendline (both linear and exponential) and make sure that you display the
equation for both the fits on the chart.
(B) Plot VP vs 1/T in K. Add a trendline (both linear and exponential) and make sure that you display the
equation on the chart.
(C) Plot ln(VP) vs 1/T in K. Add a trendline (try linear first)and display the equation on the chart.

1. Consider Plot (A).

(a) Is there a good relationship between temperature and vapor pressure?

(b) How do you know by looking at the plot and trendlines?

(c) Did you find a trendline that fit the data?

(d) If you answered “yes” to (c), what does this trendline suggest about the relationship of the vapor
pressure of ethanol to temperature?

2. Look at Plot (B). How do the first and second graphs differ?

3. Look at Plot (C)

(A) Could you get a linear relationship from the data?

(B) What is the form of the Clausius-Clayeyron equation that we use for graphing? (the form that can be
written as y = mx + b).

(C) Using the equation for the best fit line (the equation for the trendline), calculate the enthalpy of
vaporization (ΔHvap) for CCl4 in kJ/mol. (R = 8.314 J/mol K.) Show your calculations and all units.

4. Is the sign of the heat of vaporization positive or negative? Why?

5. Using your equation for the best fit line, calculate the vapor pressure of Carbon tetrachloride at 30oC?
Show your work.

6. Using your equation for the best fit line calculate the boiling point of Carbon tetrachloride (in °C) at 760
Torr. Show your work

7. Diethyl ether and Ethyl alcohol have the same molecular formula (C2H6O) and the same molar mass
(approx 46 g/mol). Compare the ΔHvap of Diethyl ether(CH3OCH3) with the ΔHvap for Ethyl
alcohol(CH3CH2OH). Look up the numbers in a reliable source (like the CRC handbook of Chemistry and
Physics or the NIST Chemistry webbook and NOT Wikepedia). Which compound has the larger Enthalpy
of vaporization? Why? Draw the Lewis structure for both compounds to help you answer why.
