Instead of adopting a formal sign convention, it is common practice


to use an intuitive approach in solving problems using the moment
area method.

In this approach, the slopes and deflections at the various points


are assumed to be positive in the directions shown on the sketch
of the deflected shape or elastic curve of the structure.

A positive answer for a slope or deflection indicates that the sense


of that quantity as assumed on the elastic curve is correct.
Conversely, a negative answer indicates that the correct sense is
opposite to that initially assumed on the elastic curve.
