NS-2 Network Simulator

 A network simulator is a piece of software or hardware that predicts the

behaviour of network, without an actual network being represent.

 NS (version 2) is an object-oriented, discrete event driven network

simulator developed at UC Berkely written in C++ and OTcl.

 Network Simulator 2(NS-2) is a widely used tool to simulate Wireless

network.

 NS-2 is a OPEN Source tool and various modules are already implemented
for this simulator. And these modules can be easily configured.

What is WiMAX?

 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is the common name

associated to the IEEE 802.16a/REVd/e standards.
 This is run by WiMAX forum.
 These standards are issued by the IEEE 802.16 subgroup that originally covered the
Wireless Local Loop technologies with radio spectrum from 10 to 66 GHz.
 It is a Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology that promises a large coverage and
high throughput. Theoretically, the coverage range can reach 30 miles and the
throughput can achieve 75 Mbit/s.
 In practice the maximum coverage range observed is about 20 km and the data
throughput can reach 9 Mbit/s using User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and 5 Mbit/s using
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

IEEE 802.16 --Introduction

5
IEEE 802.16 Standard

 IEEE 802.16 (2001)

– Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access System MAC and PHY Specifications for 10 – 66 GHZ (LoS)
– One PHY: Single Carrier
– Connection-oriented, TDM/TDMA MAC, QoS, Privacy

 IEEE 802.16a (January 2003)

– Amendment to 802.16, MAC Modifications and Additional PHY Specifications for 2 – 11 GHz (NLoS)
– Three PHYs: OFDM, OFDMA, Single Carrier
– Additional MAC functions: OFDM and OFDMA PHY support, Mesh topology support, ARQ

 IEEE 802.16d (July 2004)

– Combines both IEEE 802.16 and 802.16a
– Some modifications to the MAC and PHY

 IEEE 802.16e (2005?)

– Amendment to 802.16-2004
– MAC Modifications for limited mobility

Why We need QoS feature in WiMAX?

 The primary purpose of the QoS features defined is to define transmission ordering and
scheduling on the air interface.

 To provide Service flow in a definitive and in dynamic manner.

 Balancing voice quality, packetization delay and bandwidth utilization efficiency is very
important to the service provider.

 To control the Network delay.

 To provide VoIP service in the WiMAX module.

Existing Implementation of WiMAX

9
Existing Implementation of WiMAX
Contd….
• Both modules(NIST & NDSL) implement the physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control
(MAC) layers of a WiMAX system.

• The NIST module implements the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)
PHY while the NDSL module implements the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple
Access (OFDMA) PHY.

• Both PHY modules use the same duplexing technique: Time Division Duplexing (TDD).

• The MAC layer of these WiMAX modules contains the management messages.

• The NIST WiMAX module also supports mobility, fragmentation, and reassembly of
frames.

• The NDSL WiMAX module supports Call Admission Control (CAC).

10
Proposed future work in this project

• In this project Our contribution will consist of the addition of the QoS classes as well as
the management of the QoS requirements, unicast and contention request
opportunities mechanisms, and scheduling algorithms for the UGS, rtPS and BE QoS
classes.

• We will implement the addition of QoS classes in existing NIST module.

• In this project we will develop some schduling algorithms for existing QoS classes (UGS
service, BE service and rtPS service). And these algorithms will be more efficient as
compared to round robin algorithm and other algorithms.

• The comparision between the algorithm will be based on Throughput and Mean
Sojourn Time.
