INTRODUCTION OF AUTOMATION AND CONTROL PANEL
INDUSTRY

Automation is the use of control systems and information technologies reducing the need for
human intervention. In the scope of industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization.
Whereas mechanization provided human operators with machinery to assist them with
the muscular requirements of work, automation greatly reduces the need for
human sensory and mental requirements as well. Automation plays an increasingly important
role in the world economy and in daily experience.

With automation emerging as a focus area for not just large integrated manufacturing industries
but even for medium and small units, the Rs 4,000-crore Indian automation industry is hopeful of
growing at 20-25 per cent per annum for the next few years, according to Mr Ravi Uppal, Vice
Chairman & Managing Director of ABB Ltd and President of the Automation Industry
Association of India (AIAI).

Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a one-day seminar on the automation industry and
automation technologies here on Friday, Mr Uppal said the fortunes of the automation industry
would be driven "significantly" by the metals industry comprising steel, aluminium, copper and
zinc.

With the capacity of the steel industry expected to go up from 38 million tonnes per annum at
present to well over 100 m.t. over the next decade, the automation industry is very "upbeat"
about its growth prospects over the next few years.

8
7
Mr Uppal said, "the next decade of metals belongs to India and we have no legacy baggage to
carry". As such, Indian industry is free to choose from the best of technologies with a view to
ensuring cost-effectiveness, higher productivity and flexibility. Adoption of automation and
information technology would also facilitate integration of manufacturing processes with
business systems. According to him, adoption of automation technology would also reduce
India's dependence on imported manufactured goods for industries like automobiles. "Even
today, about 70 per cent of the steel required by our domestic automobile industry is imported.
With automation, we can manufacture the exact quality of steel that is needed by our automobile
industry right here in India", he said.

While large new industries are totally focused on automation, existing large industries and
downstream units are starting to catch up. These units are ramping up their automation initiatives
on a Level I, Level II and Level III basis. The smaller units, though, have just realised the
imperatives for automation, thanks to low productivity and high rate of rejections now faced by
them. Mr Uppal said a gradual reduction in the cost of automation equipment and the cost-benefit
achieved by companies owing to interface of business systems that were facilitated by
automation would drive the growth of the automation industry.

Impact

Automation has had a notable impact in a wide range of highly visible industries beyond
manufacturing. Once-ubiquitous telephone operators have been replaced largely by
automated telephone switchboards and answering machines. Medical processes such as primary
screening in electrocardiography or radiography and laboratory analysis of
human genes, sera, cells, and tissues are carried out at much greater speed and accuracy by
automated systems. Automated teller machines have reduced the need for bank visits to obtain
cash and carry out transactions. In general, automation has been responsible for the shift in the
world economy from agrarian to industrial in the 19th century and from industrial to services in
the 20th century.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of automation are:

8
7
 Replacing human operators in tasks that involve hard physical or monotonous work.
 Replacing humans in tasks that should be done in dangerous environments (i.e. fire, space,
volcanoes, nuclear facilities, underwater, etc)
 Making tasks that are beyond the human capabilities such as handling too heavy loads, too
large objects, too hot or too cold substances or the requirement to make things too fast or
too slow.
 Economy improvement. Sometimes and some kinds of automation implies improves in
economy of enterprises, society or most of humankind. For example, when an enterprise
that has invested in automation technology recovers its investment; when a state or country
increases its income due to automation like Germany or Japan in the 20th Century or when
the humankind can use the internet which in turn use satellites and other automated
engines.

The main disadvantages of automation are:

 Technology limits. Current technology is unable to automate all the desired tasks.
 Unpredictable development costs. The research and development cost of automating a
process is difficult to predict accurately beforehand. Since this cost can have a large impact
on profitability, it's possible to finish automating a process only to discover that there's no
economic advantage in doing so.
 Initial costs are relatively high. The automation of a new product required a huge initial
investment in comparison with the unit cost of the product, although the cost of automation
is spread in many product batches. The automation of a plant required a great initial
investment too, although this cost is spread in the products to be produced.

Automation tools

Engineers now can have numerical control over automated devices. The result has been a rapidly
expanding range of applications and human activities. Computer-aided technologies (or CAx)
now serve the basis for mathematical and organizational tools used to create complex systems.
8
7
Notable examples of CAx include Computer-aided design (CAD software) and Computer-aided
manufacturing (CAM software). The improved the design, analysis, and manufacture of products
enabled by CAx has been beneficial for industry.

Information technology, together with industrial machinery and processes, can assist in the
design, implementation, and monitoring of control systems. One example of an industrial control
system is a programmable logic controller (PLC). PLCs are specialized hardened computers
which are frequently used to synchronize the flow of inputs from (physical) sensors and events
with the flow of outputs to actuators and events.

Human-machine interfaces (HMI) or computer human interfaces (CHI), formerly known as man-
machine interfaces, are usually employed to communicate with PLCs and other computers.
Service personnel who monitor and control through HMIs can be called by different names. In
industrial process and manufacturing environments, they are called operators or something
similar. In boiler houses and central utilities departments they are called stationary engineers.

Different types of automation tools exist:

 ANN - Artificial neural network

 DCS - Distributed Control System
 HMI - Human Machine Interface
 SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
 PLC - Programmable Logic Controller
 PAC - Programmable automation controller
 Instrumentation
 Robotics

Eldon

ELDON is proud to have been providing solutions for protecting all kinds of electrical, electronic and
data & telecommunications products since its early start in 1922. With an eye to the future, Eldon remains
committed to supplying innovative products for many years to come.

Manufacturing is spread across four plants, three of them in Europe: Romania, Spain and the United
Kingdom and one in India. They also have 13 sales offices and a network of agents throughout the world,
to provide customers with the best possible Global Partnership.

One of the main things that differentiate Eldon is that they supply customized enclosures to exact
specification, to fit customer’s every need. Although “specials” normally slow down production, their
flexible approach means they can easily adapt standard designs quickly and efficiently, without causing
significant delays.

From its humble beginnings in Nassjo (Sweden) in 1922, Eldon has certainly developed into a significant
provider of enclosures, however their ideology hasn’t changed. Today’s management team believes in the
same fundamental principles as their founders, Karin and Josef Randholm: design, quality and customer
satisfaction.

England.

Opened in 1985 in Rotherham, the UK plant is the home of Stainless Steel for that matter, the production
is entirely devoted to the extensive range of stainless steel enclosures. Using local materials and local
8
7
skills built up from generations of people working with this complex material, our Rotherham facility uses
the latest 3D CAD CAM technology to produce one of the largest range of standard sized enclosures in
the market. Small teams working in dedicated cells make production both flexible and reactive. Due to
the specialist experience and use of stainless steel, Rotherham Production manufactures a high proportion
of standard "specials" to meet our customer’s exact specification.

Spain.

Located in the South of Spain, in Andalusia, Martos is a small but busy industrial town surrounded by
olive groves. The factory was originally built by HIMO S.A. in the mid 1970’s to manufacture
enclosures, and was acquired by Eldon in 1990. The manufacture of the Multi-Mount® range of mild
steel enclosures is completely automated; the enclosures are punched, bent, welded and painted, without
the need for any human intervention. Every Multi-Mount® enclosure is uniquely painted inside and out
using a structured powder coating, to ensure the maximum protection against corrosion.

Romania.

One of the largest recent investments has been to build an entirely new factory on a green field site,
during 2006-7. Situated in the very heart of Transylvania, Eldon was the first company to move onto a
new Industrial Estate in the town of Prejmer. Initially manufacturing a variety of labour intensive
products, Romania will continue to grow and add further capacity to allow the Group to keep up with the
current rising demand for enclosures.

India.

Located in Umbergaon, Distt. Valsad, Gujarat State, the factory is approx. 150 km from both Mumbai
and Ahmedabad. Eldon is already a well known, recognized brand in India, gaining popularity among
customers as a provider of high quality products. Consultants, Machine builders, specifiers and installers
utilize products from our range with great ease and satisfaction.

The ELDON sales team maintains regular contact with customers and our distributors are located
throughout the country. With production supplied directly from ELDON CS -India factory, customers
benefit with an important price advantage and a great delivery time.
