THE WRITING PROCESS

1. PREWRITING: Take time to think about the topic to write about. Plan the
piece of writing.

1.1. GENERATING IDEAS: There are strategies and techniques for

generating ideas. Invention techniques:

 Brainstorming: it is a sudden insight or connection. A way to

associate ideas and stimulate thinking. Write a word/topic. Then,
write a list of ideas as quickly as possible. Organize the ideas that
are related. Example:

 Free-writing: it is writing without stopping. It means writing

whatever comes to your mind without worrying about whether
the ideas are good or the grammar is correct. Write them as they
come to your mind. Set a time limit or number of pages to write.
Then, reread and look for ideas that might be useful in your
writing.
 WH-questions: Use questions to generate material for your
writing. Ask questions relating to: who, what, where, when, why.
Then, answer them. Example:
 Clustering: It is making a visual map of your ideas. Begin with
your topic circled in the middle of a sheet of paper. Then draw a
line out form the circle and write ideas associated with it. Circle
this idea and form it draw lines and write ideas associate with it.
Continue to map or cluster until you cannot think of any more
ideas. Example:

2. PLANNING: Writers focus their ideas on a main point and develop a

rough plan for the paragraph or essay they are going to write.

3. DRAFTING: It is the actual writing of the paragraph or essay. Once you

have gathered material and made a rough plan, you are ready to write.
Follow the plan you have mapped out. Do not focus on grammatical
correctness.

4. REVISING: After you have wrote your draft the real work of writing
begins. Revising is broken down into two parts:
4.1. REVISING: It involves changing the content and organization of the
paragraph or essay. It is rethinking or re-seeing your paper. Evaluate
your writing. Get feedback of others. You may ad, cut, replace, and
move ideas, phrases or sentences. You focus on the content of your
writing.

4.2. EDITING: It focuses on the form of your writing, that is to say how
you expressed your ideas. Rephrase sentences that are not clear or
not precise. Check the grammar of the sentences. Check the spelling
and punctuation of your writing. Finally proofread your paper.
