Child/Tama: Abdulrahman. Teacher/ Kaiako: Naema.

Date: 27th August/ 2018.

Aslam-0-Alakum kia Ora! Abdulrahman, your last story was about how you have been
gaining the confidence in recognizing your own abilities by finding strategies to initiate and
maintain play alongside teachers and other children. During last few weeks we supported
you with the learning pathways contribution/ Mana tangata and encouraged you to play in
a co-operative and creative manner. To further extend your interaction with children in
group I setup the building blocks on the table so you can get the opportunity to play with
other children together. You stood for some time and then looked at me. I placed few blocks
and said, “Abdulrahman what would you like to do?” With a big smile you started to
explore your ideas and investigated the construction blocks and stack few blocks on top of
one another. You were working on your imagination when you heard Saloomi making car
sound ‘broom’. You watched him for some time sliding car on the model road then you tried
to get car from his hand. Saloomi firmly held the car in his hand and said, “No” you stopped
and looked at me I said, “Saloomi just got that car from the box, come I will show you the
box from where you can chose the one you like”. You took some time and a chose a red car,
then suddenly you were distracted by the books on the table. You chose counting book and
asked me to read it for you. I asked if you want to play with the car but you gave me the
book to read it for you. We sat down and I read the book to you. You were very proud of
yourself when I praised you for responding to open-ended questions, recognizing numbers,
colours and pictures.

What is happening?
Abdulrahman! Observation shows your growing understanding of centre setting as you
came in a calm manner to the table to join other children. While exploring the construction
blocks you got attracted towards Saloomi’s play and wanted to take his car but when you
heard him saying, No.” you stopped and looked around for help. This shows you are
developing social skills and understanding other children’s point of view. You
communicated with adults for help in your non-verbal gesture. Your passion for books is
also evident as you chose a book and asked me to read it for you and you were able to
recognize numbers, shapes and colours. Ka pai to mahi (Good job)
How can we extend this learning?
We will continue supporting you with the learning pathways Contribution/ Mana tangata
and will encourage you to further understand your play in a co-operative and creative
manner. We will also follow your interest in reading books and facilitate you with all
learning opportunities in the preschool.

Revisit: 12th September,

Today on children’s request I got ‘Marble run’ game and put that on the table and gave one
marble each to play in a group of four children. I encouraged Abdulrahman and Saloomi to
come in a pair to run their marble on each side together and then wait for their turn while
Bushra and Bukhari could have their turns. Abdurrahman I noticed that you were
developing the social skills and understanding the concept of cooperative play, waiting, and
turn taking. I noticed you were repeating the word like, my turn Bushra turn Saloomi turn
and “Fareeha turn. I am so happy Abdulrahman by repeating words you are learning
children names and this will help you to build relationships with your preschool mats.
