Content Area: Visual Arts Grade Level: 6th to 8th graders
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CCSS VA- Artistic Perception
Students perceive & respond to works of art (objects, events, environment). They will be using the vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations.

CCSS VA- Creative Expression

Students apply artistic processes & skills, using a variety of media in efforts to communicate meaning & intent in original works of art.

CCSS VA- Historical & Cultural Context

Students analyze the role & development of the visual arts in past & present cultures (worldwide). Students need to recognize human diversity as it correlates to the visual
arts & artists.

CCSS VA- Aesthetic Valuing

Students will then analyze, assess, & identify meaning from works of art, including their own. When evaluating art, students must use the elements of art (formal elements),
the principles of design, & aesthetic qualities.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Big Ideas:
Students will explore different artists’ artworks & learn more about the artists 'style. Students will also use vocabulary of the visual arts to demonstrate their knowledge on
the artist/artwork they have chosen to research on.

1. How does the artist incorporate certain art elements, principles of art, & aesthetic qualities in their artwork?
2. Does the artist have a personal style? If so, what is the artist’s style?
3. What is the message the artist wants to convey to their audience? Is there any meaning behind the artwork they created?

21st Century Skills:

1. Students will use the internet to research on an artist of their choice (must be confirmed with me) & create a short PowerPoint/Prezi on that specific artist’s life, art
style, art elements, principles of art, & aesthetic qualities used.
2. Students will then recreate one of the artist’s artwork but use their own style instead. Referencing artwork from online art databases/galleries/museums is
mandatory.

Unit Summary:
• Students will do minimal research on an artist of their choice. Research MUST include: artist’s birthdate, place of birth, art style/movement, one artwork from the
artist that the student finds interesting to go into detail about (formal element & principles of design), and why they chose that artist (5 slides minimum)
• After researching on the artist, students will then create a presentation on either PowerPoint or Prezi with the facts they learned on the artist. Slides MUST include
the same things from the research (artist’s birthdate, place of birth, art style/movement, choose one of the artist’s artwork and identify the formal elements &
principles of design, and last but not least the last slide should be why the artist was chosen.
• Upon completion with the presentation, students get to share their presentation with the class. Participation is vital.
• After completing the presentation portion of the unit plan, students will then choose an artwork from the artist they researched on and recreate one artwork that
they like. This is the creative freedom aspect of the unit plan, students get to use their own style to recreate one of the artist’s artwork and share it with the class in
a critique.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:
