Empathic Responding

· Empathic Responding is the ability to respond with empathy to students. This skill allows you to
show that you are aware and accepting. The function in the classroom is that it helps the lines of
communication stay open between the teacher and the students. The difference from constructive
assertiveness and empathic assertiveness is that constructive assertiveness is more of standing up for
ones legitimate rights. Empathic is more like a feeling or emotion. The advantages of this is you get to
know your students more and see what they are feeling.
