PRE SEMESTER EXAMINATION

12EE72 – Design of Electrical Machines

(Regulation 2012)
Time: Three hours Max. Marks: 100
Answer all Questions.
Part: A - (10 X 2 =20)
1. What are the considerations to be made while designing electrical machines?
 Cost
 Durability
 Compliance with the performance specification and consumer requirement
2. What do you infer from the term Iron space factor?
The iron space factor is defined as the ratio of the actual length of iron in a stack assembled core plates to total
axial length of stack (usual value of k=0.9)
3. What are the factors to be considered for the selection of number of poles in dc machine?
 Frequency
 Weight of iron parts
 Weight of copper parts
 Length of commutator
 Labour charges
 Flash over and distorsion of filed form.
4. Define field form factor?
The filed form factor Kf is defined as the ratio of average gap density over the Pole pitch to maximum flux
density in the air gap. Kf = Bav / Bg Kf≈ ψ = pole arc/pole pitch
5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of three phase transformer bank over three single phase
transformers?
Advantage:
 Being prewired and ready to install, these can be easier to install.
 To provide the same KVA, the core material required is very less compared to bank of three single phase
transformers.
 It is lighter and smaller.
 It requires less space to install.
 Higher efficiency.
 Low cost compared with three units of single phase transformers.
Disadvantage:
 Cost of repair is more for three phase transformer.
 To restore the service, spare unit cost is more compared with one single transformer spare unit.
 When these are self cooled, the capacity of the transformer is reduced.
6. List some methods of cooling of transformers?
Air natural, Air blast, Oil Natural, Oil natural air forced, Oil natural water forced, Oil forced, Oil forced air
natural, Oil forced air natural, Oil forced water forced.
7. Write the rules for selecting rotor slots in an induction motor?
Number of stator slots should not be equal to rotor slots satisfactory results are
 Obtained when Sr is 15 to 30% larger or smaller than Ss.
 The difference (Ss - Sr) should not be equal to + or - p, + or – 2p or + or – 5 p to avoid synchronous
cusps.
 The difference (Ss - Sr) should not be equal to + or - 1, + or – 2 , + or – (p+1) or + or – (p+2) to avoid
noise and vibrations.
8. What is dispersion coefficient in an induction motor?
The dispersion coefficient is defined as the ratio of magnetizing current to ideal short circuit current.
9. Mention some effect of SCR on synchronous machine performance?
SCR affects the vital performance like stability, voltage regulation, short circuit current and parallel operation.
10. What is mean by Runaway-speed?
The runaway speed of a water turbine is its speed at full flow, and no shaft load. The turbine will be designed to
survive the mechanical forces of this speed. The manufacturer will supply the runaway speed rating.
