• What important information did you obtain about site-based decision making
from your interviews with the SBDM member? The campus principal?
• What information from the interviews aligned with your understandings of site-
based decision making?
In our school SBDM committee, the general make-up consists of 1 teacher to represent each
grade level. For example: Kinder and Pre-Kinder have one representative, First grade has one
representative, Second grade had one representative, etc. The use of formal agendas is only
kept when the meetings are called in advanced. However, when emergency meetings are held
an agenda is discussed, teachers write and share with the grade level. By that same afternoon
they will receive a typed up agenda of what was discussed personally by the principal. The
topics that are generally discussed include reading fluency, Tejas Lee, and other areas of
concern for the lower grade levels. For the upper grades (3rd- 5th ) topics involve TAKS and
intervention. Otherwise as a whole campus important deadlines, events, and policy changes are
also discussed. Other happenings that occur during SBDM are votes of curriculum, and other
topics.Generally on this area the SBDM first reports to the grade level and when she meets
back with the principal relays the vote according to how we decided and the same applies for all
other grade levels. As far as conflict-resolution strategies, the rule of thumb is once a topic of
concerned is stated the committee members have an opportunity to express their concerns and
as a team discuss on possible solutions. Ultimately if there can’t be a decision reach, the
principal has the last call. Overall, I was actually impressed with how the process works. In other
campuses I can honestly attest to having no uniformity on how to go about having SBDM
meetings. During the meetings plenty of areas are covered, SBDM shares with grade levels,
SBDM committees report to inform principal of outcomes, and everybody has an opportunity to
express their ideas and concerns. The is the uniform basis of how SBDM works and it’s a good
one at my school.

learned in this course about the continuous campus improvement cycle that will
dictate your next steps?
• What will be your next steps in the continuous improvement process? How will
you carry the action plan forward and maintain momentum? Outline and reflect
on your next steps in this process.
A school action plan is always a continual process that keeps evolving every school year. Just
as the standards keep changing for state mandated exams such as the TAKS so does every
aspect related to that. That is a direct reference to the curriculum, the materials, the priorities of
what standards need to be taught and how it is that they need to be taught. The general feeling
is that in order for an action plan to work the team implementing the plan must be consistent,
constally follow up, and be able to fix any last minute difficulties that might present themselves.
In other words the team must maintain flexibility so that the plan runs smoothly and at the same
time make last minute changes if needed. According to my action plan to improve the science
scores, my process of carrying the action plan will heavily involve constant communication with
the 5th grade teachers to assist them through the revamp process of the curriculum. If needed
accommodations in order to execute the action plan to its fullest extent.
