EXPERIMENT NO : 1

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL LOGIC DESIGN LAB

OBJECTIVES
The objective of this experiment :
1. To understand the rule of Digital Logic Design Lab.
2. To understand the use of digital trainer, bread board and
other lab equipment.
3. To determine the logic connection, power supply and pin
configuration using data book of IC.
EQUIPMENTS

 BREAD BOARD
 DIGITAL TRAINER
 CONNECTING WIRES
 POWER 220 V
DETAILS OF EQUIPMENTS

 BREAD BOARD
Bread board consists of two terminal strips and two bus trips.
Each bus strip has two rows of contacts. Each of two rows of
contacts are a node. Bus strips are used primarily for power
supply connections but are also used for any node requiring a
large number of connections.

 DIGITAL LOGIC TRAINER

The main parts of digital logic trainer are as follows:
1. Regulated power supply
2. State monitors
3. Logic switches
4. Digital display
5. BCD logic inputs
Details are as follows:
1. Regulated power supply
power supply with short circuit protection that provides
+5v , +12v , and -12v with power indicators and protection
fuse.
2. State monitors
State monitors are simply light emitting diodes, which are
used to indicate the state of logic output. Lighted diode
represents logic -1 and unlighted diodes means logic-0.
3. Logic switches
There are 8 logic switches are special types of switches ,
designed to produced two TTL compatible logic outputs
which are the complement of each other.
4. Digital display
State monitors are simply light emitting diodes, which are
used to indicate the state of logic output. Lighted diode
represents logic -1 and unlighted diodes means logic-0.
5. BCD logic display
If a BCD logic input is applied to the four input terminals, it
will be decoded and display on the corresponding seven
segment display.

MEASURING POWER SUPPLIES

 Connect the trainer to the 220v power source and turn on

the trainer.
 Measure the different supplies available on the trainer.
 Note the readings using multi-meter.

MEASURING LOGIC LEVEL OF LEDs

 Connect the trainer to the 220v power source and turn on

the trainer.
 Connect the LED of your choice to the 5v supply.
 The LED should be on indicating logic -1 level.
 Note the readings using multi-meter.
Measuring the logic level of switches

 Connect the trainer to the 220v power source and turn on

the trainer.
 Connect the switch 1 to the LED 1 of the trainer.
 Make the switch off, the LED will not glow. It indicate that
logic is at 0 level.
 Make the switch on, the LED will glow. It indicate that logic
is at 1 level.

Using BCD logic

 Connect the trainer to the 220v power source and turn on

the trainer.
Connect the BCD to the logic available on the trainer using
switches. It will display on the corresponding seven
segment display.

Conclusions

In this lab , we learnt about the trainer and different parts

of trainer. In this lab we learn the basics of bread board, its
series bus as well as parallel bus.
