 Weekly progress (from1-7-2018 to 14-8-2018)
• Week one: Safety induction

- The first week of the practical training, started by meeting the Project manager Engineer
Rabie Ballan to introduce us to the rest of the stuff and explain us general project details such
as the type of the project and due date. How fast they are working on this project. Moreover,
they are working 24 hours with 1300 labour in the morning shift and more than 500 labour in
night shift. After that, the safety Engineer gave us a very important lecture about Safety and
health and very to start our journey in the practical training. Because it is imperative to
educate everyone on the site regarding safety purpose as following

1- Worker safety

There are many people and labours (2000 labour) in this project this can lead to many
accidents in case of lack of protection

2- Construction progress

As long everyone involves in the site are safe this lead avoiding of many problem and delays,
and that would increase development of the project

3- Legal cases

Following the safety procedure will prevent any legal cases would happen if any injuries
occur or death.

4- Working efficiency

Whenever the labours are working in a safe Place, this would increase their efficiency of
work

- Safety procedure

Any construction site is a dangerous occupation for all personnel, especially for labours working on
site and so one must be prepared every day for safety. For this purpose, various safety measures must
be taken.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

PPE Requirements for Safety at Construction Site Must be supplied for everyone
involved in the site and anyone would temporary visit the site such as
1- Helmet

As shown in figure 2 helmet is issued to each personnel working on site. It must be worn all times Figure 2 site helmet

at job site

2- Safety glasses

Safety glasses as shown in figure 3 are required at the construction site when the air is Figure 3 Safety
glasses
filled with specks of dust due to activities on site or weather conditions, and it is essential
here in Qatar because of the type of windy weather full of dust and sands.

3- Hands protection gloves

Hand gloves as shown in figure 4 are supplied to all labours to protect against cuts when
Figure 4 Hand
handling equipment’s gloves

4- Safety Vest

Purpose of safety vest as shown in figure 5 is to keep the person always clear in view, even
in the dark and he should be visible to everyone

Precautions at the site for safety

Figure 5 vest

When safety engineer provides us with the needed PPE to start the work, we have got some
essential precautions such as

1- Wear the personal protective equipment all the time

2- Pay attention to personal hygiene
3- Report to the supervisor immediately if there is an unsafe condition. That was the first
assign duty in this journey.

• Week two (reading Drawing and understanding the project)

- We started this week with Engineer “Mohamed Ayman” to explain to us the Important
drawing of steel and RC. It is like what we learned in Construction course but with extra
details such as different dashes paints on the drawing and each has a different meaning such
as the material used if concert or steel. Moreover, there are many symbols and a lot of
abbreviations such as DIA and DP which will be explained below.

- There are essential notes I have noted to me to make it easier to understand the drawing.

1- Read the Title block:

Title block gives information about who, what

and when etc. purpose of Title block is to show
administrative details.

2- Read the legend

Legend is the key to the plan it provides all the

symbols used, and it is meaning. As shown in
figure 5 There are many symbols for each
discipline, and it says a lot in the drawing this
shows the material used in this part. Moreover,
Engineers need to know some abbreviations such
as DIA which refer to Diameter or DP which
refer to depth.

3- Understand the scale: Figure 6 different symbols in legend

It is important to understand the scale because it shows the relative size of the elements

4- Read the elevation and section drawings for the same part to get a full picture of the
same part
5- It is important to read the other disciplines drawings such as Electric drawing and
Mechanical engineering drawing to understand their work to avoid a lot of mistakes
would happen if there are some mistakes in the dimension in any of the drawings.

- Engineers Explained to us how to check Granite quality

1- Engineers showed us how to check granite polish quality.

Using metallic equipment to scratch on the surface. If metallic material leaves marks behind
then, the polishing was not done to the highest quality

2- There is a little test to check the granite porosity by letting a few drops on the surface
of the granite. Watch it determine how long it takes to absorb. If it takes a long time
or doesn’t appear to be absorbed in all, that means granite is less porous, requires less
sealant and will last longer.

3- Checking for the base course in plot 2B:

Engineer Mohamed Ayamen asked us to check the base course for plot 2B and testing it with
specification and drawing.

• Week three

1- Installation of the truss at the multipurpose hall.

Because of the heavy weight and size of the truss as shown in figure 7 and
7. moreover, to follow the safety procedure, there were two cranes to carry
the truss. No one allowed to be under the cranes and the truss while Figure 7 Truss
developing the work.

2- Installation of decking sheets for metal roofing system in Area (2-5)

Decking sheet is significant to protect the big trusses in the void area from
the rain and weather condition as shown in figure 9. It is installed above
the truss and minimum reinforcement added to it and then covered with the Figure 8Truss
concert this increase it is strength, weight and stability.

Moreover, using shear studs to connect decking. Decking sheet is

considered very well in the design because it transfers live load, Dead
load and wind load.

3- installation reinforcement for retaining wall

We checked the number of the bars for the primary and secondary Figure 9 Decking sheets

reinforcement in the retaining wall, the depth of the retaining wall and number of stirrups. It
is very possible to find missing reinforcement bars in the RC concrete because of the human
mistake and the fast progress of the project, so it is always better for the Engineer to recheck
the reinforcement by himself one more time.

4- Casting of retaining wall

We saw the pump crate when it carries up to cast the retaining wall. Casting happens after 4
pm as we learned in the college it is not right to cast in the hot atmosphere that because the
water will evaporate so quickly and will cause some small cracks in the concrete

• Week four

1- Casting concert in the steel columns

In this project, steel columns are used. however, steel columns are designed to carry all the
loads. But the main purpose of casting the concrete in the steel columns is to increase its
weight, and it increases the strength of the column as well.

2- Bathroom plastering in Area LG 4

We are assigned to supervise the work of plastering, and ceramic work
was going on in the bathroom in Area LG4 as shown in Figure 8.
There are two notes on that
a) For the wall that will be painted labours had to make a smooth
plastering and the plastering was in two layers then after that it had to be
Figure 10 Bathroom ceramic
washed in the temporary white paint.
b) For Ceramic labours had to make two layers also. Of plastering, the last segment had to
be rough not smooth as the first one, and that is for the Ceramic is to be fixed in the wall after
putting little of the plaster in the back of the Ceramic. Moreover, there were two mm sticks
supports between the parts of Ceramic to leave the two mm void between the ceramic
elements.
- I reported a safety issue to the safety engineer about plastering labours were working
using scaffolding in a Hight almost 2 meters and was not using harness belt or helmets.
Moreover, other workers were working down the scaffolding in plastering as well. However,
this is easy work. But it is not acceptable for the labours to not use the helmet especially for
those who are working down the scaffolding. There is the probability that any equipment may
fall on them and cause injuries.
• Week five and six
- We attended a technical meeting with a fabricator who is responsible for Catwalk (Qatar
Indo Fab): In this meeting, the sub-contractor had to meet the contractor and to provide them
with the full drawings as the contractor asked. The contractor had to make sure of the quality
and the material used for the catwalk. This meeting was critical to me to learn the formal
communications at work and how to get the crucial information from the sub-contractor.
- We attended another meeting with Al-Read Company to discuss the installation of the
catwalk. That happened after we debated the drawings and the material with Qatar Indo Fab.
Al-Read Company gave a lot of promises of the quality and the experience of the work. I
learned in These two meetings from Engineer Rabie Ballan much of communication skills
and leadership skills. I learned how to guide the stuff to reach the required quality and
progress and achieve the goal.
- Installation of purlins for main trusses Although I did not study steel structure and it was
hard to understand some concepts in the steel structure. I learned that purlins are a primary
member in the roof structure. It is essential to consider in design because it transmits dead,
live and wind load to the columns and then to the foundation. It also provides lateral stability
for the frame. Pure lines are parallel to the ridge lines, and they are running along the span of
the roof Truss. Moreover, it is supported by rafters. It is necessary because the decking sheet
will lay on them. After understanding the purlins, we are assigned to supervise the work of
welding with steel frames.
- Casting the slap on grade
Slap on grade we did not study in the college. We learned it in the site. In the beginning, I did
not understand in the drawing why there is reinforcement in the ground. But the engineer
explained to us that is the slap on grade with minimum reinforcement and spacing 15cm.

 Problems in site
1. Some lack of understanding of some theoretical and names
This project mostly of Steel structure and I did not study steel structure yet. This makes the
situation hard for me in the beginning to understand these theoretical parts. Moreover, other
topics related to pavement course which I did not study yet as well. It was hard to get what
the engineer explained at the beginning but then after I saw the application of these theories.
It will help me a lot to understand and visualise them in the college.
2. Understanding the project drawing.
For the first time, it was hard to know how to read the drawing. It was hard to understand
how to start. In more than 1000 page. In construction course, we learned the concepts of
reading the drawings. But in the site, it requires more than the concept. It needs experience of
how to read them quickly and accurately. In the first days, it took me one full day to read one
page and to understand every single detail on it.
3. The latency of receiving concrete
In this project recently, we faced a problem because of all the concert stations in Lusail which
is near the project are closed. After some discussion with engineers. We started to get the
concrete from the Industrial area. I tried to make some communication with engineers I know
working on that field. But Engineer Yehia preferred another company. But we still have some
latency in receiving the concert.
 Multi-disciplinary work
1- Installation of firefighting system
I spent a couple of days with the Mechanical engineer. He explained and showed me how
they are installing the firefighting system. The first thing they approval for the material and
drawing. Then the Procurement department does their work until they receive the material.
The consultant and the civil defence must approve the drawing as well before starting the job.
The installation happens in three stages (Firefighting 1st attempt, firefighting 2nd attempt and
fir fighting fix installation). Firefighting 1st attempt mechanicals starts to draw the marks
where the pipe will go and fix the hangers and supports for the pip. Firefighting 2nd attempt
the mechanicals install the firefighting pipe headers, sprinkle and the drops. In addition to the
pump and the accessories. After the firefighting 2nd attempt, there is a hydrostatic test of
piping. In this project the test was okay. Then the last fix which is the final firefighting fix.
Mechanicals starts to install splinters and zonal control valve, fire alarm system, fire hose
cabinets and fixing fire blanket. 1st and 2nd attempts are called dirty work. Because the work
is not on it is final look and not clean as we can see it. Final attempt called the clean work
because it is the final thing people will see. The last attempt still underworks in this project in
some areas and even did not start on other areas. Final attempt called the clean part because
this is the part people will see. It was great to understand this part and see in in the project.
2- Installation of Electrical activity
I spent a couple of days with the Electrical Engineer. The Electrical engineer explained to me
how they do their work. It is like the mechanical in the stages. They need to get the approval
for the material and the drawings before any action, this stage all the disciplinary need to do.
There are three attempts (1st, 2nd and final fix installation). In the first fix installation.
Electrical fix the conduits and GI boxes for the mains sockets. In the 2nd attempt, Electrical
start to install LV and ELV cabling, wiring, and the bus duct installation. After the 2nd
attempt, there is an installation resistance test, if the test is okay the continue the cable of
conductors. After finishing all the cables. There is another test with temporary power. I
attended this test, and all the work was okay. Then the transformer is installed by the
authority after getting the approval. Before the last attempt, the authority comes and make its
inspections. The latest attempt is about the accessories, the lumps etc.
 Conclusion
In conclusion, practical training with Tadmur company teaches me many new benefits
information that provides me a good background about field work. Moreover, how to relate
the theories and concepts I learned in college to the application in work to have the best
results. I got experience in different disciplines and learned how they do their job. I learned
how it is essential for a civil engineer to understand other disciplines such as mechanical,
architectural, electrical work and need. Because as a civil engineer i/m the first one start in
the project work. I learned there are essential aspects such as safety and communications. I
have faced some problems during my training because of the project on its stage most of the
work are steel and pavement and finishing. These topics I did not study yet in the college.
However, understanding the application should lead to better visualization and understanding
in my studies. This is a very informative experience with great teamwork.
