Objective
● The students will be able to illustrate a drawing of a shoe and compare and contrast with
their table the differences and similarity between the shoes with 90% accuracy.
● Students will be able to identify differences in cultures and be able to adapt when needed.
Materials Needed
The book New Shoes Susan Lynn Meyer
Writing utensils (Crayons, markers, colored pencils)
Shoe picture templates (Already printed on desk)

Procedure
1. Introduce: Present the book New Shoes Susan Lynn Meyer, and give a brief intro on
Civil Rights movement and segregation in the past
2. Read: High level students go to the back table and read the book in a group while teacher
reads with lower level kids.(I read ,you read)
3. Discuss: (“Think, Pair, Share”) After all students have read the book New Shoes
teacher will start an open discussion about the book and what happened in the story.
Students will raise their hand and answer the questions on the back of the book which are
review questions. Students will answer the questions and if help is need their partner can
help them. After the book review questions in the open discuss, they will work
independently on the 5 questions that will be written on the board.
4. Question 1. In 2 sentences write what you know about the civil movement.
● Question 2. How do you think Ella Mae felt when she could not try on the shoes?
● Question 3. What can you notice about Ella Mae and her family?
● Question 4. What was the concept (main idea) of the story?
● Question 5. Was there anything that you did not understand in the book if no, what was
something you learned.
Activities
1. Students will be handed a paper to be able to answer the questions that are based on the
book that was read in class. Students will be working in groups based on level.
2. Students will then be able to color in a picture of a shoe that was like the one in the book
upon completion of previous assignment.
Evaluation
● Teacher will discuss the 5 questions after it has been collected and go over the answers
and ask students what they answered.
