MATLAB/Simulink Installation Instructions for Students

Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh and Linux/Unix

The Statistical Consulting Center

The MathWorks MATLAB and Simulink programs are computational software environments used to perform a variety of
computational tasks such as in engineering, science, mathematics, statistics and finance. The UT system-wide Total
Academic Headcount (TAH) license includes MATLAB, Simulink and 54 add-on products. All products are listed below in
the section “TAH Licensed Products.” The license agreement provides free access to UT faculty, staff and students for use
on University-owned, personally-owned or leased computers.

If you already have MATLAB installed and you wish to continue using it, you may do so. However, if you want to upgrade
to MATLAB 2008a or higher, want to add any of the 54 toolboxes, or you are a new MATLAB user, you must use the UT
system-wide TAH license. To convert to the TAH license, MATLAB installations that have a currently-maintained license
must first be uninstalled. In addition, installations of MATLAB 2008a and higher must also be deactivated.

Note The TAH license is intended to be a free replacement for all eligible licenses that the University of Tennessee has with
The Mathworks. As such, MATLAB, Simulink and all toolboxes (except two Maple-linked Symbolic toolboxes) that were in
use when the TAH license was acquired are included in this license, plus a few others were added by special request. If your
license is currently maintained under The Mathworks’ Software Maintenance Services (SMS), your license has been
suspended and placed in storage with The Mathworks. If the University should decide not to renew the TAH license
agreement, your stored license in the most recent version can be taken from storage after paying one year of maintenance
fees. If your license is not under maintenance or is a student license, it is not affected by the TAH agreement and it cannot be
integrated with the licensed TAH products.

Getting Started

The MATLAB TAH agreement has two options: the Campus Option and the Student Option. The Campus Option is for use
by University of Tennessee employees only, while the Student Option is for University of Tennessee students only. This
MATLAB installation document describes the Student Option installation on a student’s personally-owned or leased
computer. If you are a faculty or staff member of the University of Tennessee and not a student, please download and use the
installation document for faculty and staff.

Before you begin, make sure that your computer meets the following minimum system requirements.

Symbolic Toolboxes
Due to licensing restrictions, the Symbolic Math Toolbox and Extended Symbolic Math Toolbox are not currently available
under the site license. As of R2008b, scheduled to be released at the end of September, The MathWorks will release
Symbolic Math Toolbox 5, which will no longer use the Maple computational engine. Symbolic Math Toolbox 5 will be a
single product with the combined capabilities of Extended Symbolic Math Toolbox and Symbolic Math Toolbox. Symbolic
Math Toolbox 5 will also support an interface to the standalone Maple software. The MathWorks will continue to sell the
current Maple-based versions of Symbolic Math Toolbox and Extended Symbolic Math Toolbox through September 28,
2008.

Between now and R2008b, there are several options:

1. Each user or department will be responsible for maintaining MATLAB Symbolic toolbox licenses. Existing
symbolic licenses may be associated with the “parent” site-wide MATLAB license. Symbolic toolbox access will be
limited to the number of licenses owned by the user or department. Real-time network access to a license server may
be required, depending on the type of license. Departments not willing or able to operate a departmental license
server may contract with OIT for license management services.
2. Use the existing site-license for Maple for symbolic mathematics.
3. Individuals may purchase the Symbolic toolbox for local installation. This is not recommended unless you cannot
wait until R2008b.
