Introduction

This experiment was carried out to show mixing and compaction of concrete. We carrying out
a slump test and making cubes, we made 3 natural aggregate concrete and 4 recycled aggregate
concrete. The compressive test was carried out after 7 and 28 days of curing the concrete. The
test was done by crashing the cubes in a compressing machine.

Aim & purpose

1. To study the workability of the designed and compressive strength of concrete cubes.

Material and Equipment

Equipment

 Concrete cube mould

 Vibrating table
 Slump-test apparatus
 Weighting machine
 Curing tank
 Concrete compression machine

Material

 Cement – 7kg
 Sand – 14kg
 Aggregate – 28kg
Procedure

1. A concrete mix was designed according to a ratio 1:2:4 of cement, sand and
aggregate.
2. Material required to produce two cube with dimension of 150mm x 150mm x 150mm
and three cube with dimension 100mm x 100mm x 100mm were prepared.
3. Sand, cement and natural aggregate were mixed together.

4. A slump test was conducted.

5. Then, by using the same mixture, two cube with dimension of 150mm on each side
were formed.
6. Step 3 was repeated but replacing the natural aggregate with recycle aggregate to
form three cube with 100mm of dimension each.

7. All the mixture was filled into curing tank and placed them in water for 7 and 28 days.

8. On the 7 and 28 days, the cubes were taken out for the test with the compression
machine to determine the compressive strength.
9. The value of strength on the compression machine was determined and the data was
tabulated.

10. By referring to BS 1881: Part 116 : 1983, the compressive strength of concrete cube
were determined.

Discussion

The cubes are tested at 7 and 28 days. Usually 3 cubes will be tested after 7 days and another
3 cubes after 28 days. This depends of the requirement based on the design. For concrete to
develop strength, the chemical reactions need to proceed continuously. Curing refers to
procedure for maintaining a proper environment for the hydration process to occur and it is
carried in places where there’s water such as the curing tank that were used. The inner
surfaces of the concrete mould greased with oil to prevent grease or dirt stick at the sides of
the cubes.
