Speaking Through an Interpreter in Church

There are some things you need to consider before speaking through an interpreter in a church setting. You may already be familiar with everything listed here, but since our goal is that Gods message get through to the listeners, take a few minutes to read on just in case.

Flowinthesameanointing
Thorough knowledge of the two languages is important but not enough. I need a special anointing for being able to flow together with you, and that is my mainprayerrequest.

Messagetranslated
There can be many things in a message that depend on the cultural background. Sayings, proverbs, stories with a moral, anecdotes, jokes, illustrations (Europeans have no clue about baseball and American football!) etc. sometimes have their Hungarian counterparts. If they are short enough like a saying or a proverb I will automatically use the Hungarian equivalent (if I know any). If they are longer or if you want to have a point based on them, please, check the situation before you speak. Especially jokes should be handled with care because what is funny in one culture can be offensive (or just not funny at all) in another... Please, specifically instruct me when you need awordforwordtranslation.

Interpretingortranslating?
The rule of thumb is that whatever is created in writing should be translated in writing and whatever is created in speech should be interpreted. Please, make proper arrangements for a written translation of longer quotes, written speeches, Power Point presentationsetc.

Briefdiscussionbeforespeaking
It is usually helpful to discuss what you will talk about. Some passages in the Hungarian versions of the Bible are quite different from the popular English versions. If a point is strongly built on certain verses or words, theseshouldbecheckedinadvance.

Wordplays,alliteration,acronyms
Puns dont translate. They just dont. Please, dont use them! If you do, I will have to get into a lengthy explanation on how funny you are, and even then the point will most probably be missed... Messages built on alliteration or acronyms will come through, but obviouslywithoutthesespecialeffects.

Hungarianlanguage
Basically Hungarian sentences are structured differently than English sentences. Please, dont break up sentences and thoughts as it wont help but hinder translation.

Neutrality
Even though I myself preach and thus have some kind of a standpoint on Bible doctrines and practices, I will not bring my own opinion on your points or messages or actions into the interpretation. If you preach heresy, I will interpret heresy, but you will get the spankingafterwards...
