accompanied with notes. Five (5) parent notes are accepted, per term.
Medical notes must cover the entire day, not just the appointment time.
Parents will be contacted when students accumulate five (5) unexcused
absences. If you have any attendance questions, please contact Ms. Lathim.
Thank you!

Pre-Kindergarten
In PreK we are using our new curriculum Big Day In PreK. We have been learning
about our school (routines), making friends, and our families. On September 28th, we
will have our first field trip! We are excited to visit the Echo Valley Corn Maze.

Kindergarten
We have had an exciting month in Kindergarten! We are learning lots and would like to
give our parents some ideas and skills to reinforce at home. Please review the
following with your child at home: writing your child's first and last name and letters
(both capital and lowercase), letter identification and letter sounds, color words, and
the first set of sight words for the first benchmark.

First Grade
Lincoln’s fantastic first graders have been very busy learning and having fun! During
the month of September, in Math we will continue with addition. Students will learn
how to add up to 10 quickly by using different strategies. We will cover several
Science topics through our Interactive Read alouds, including the changes of
seasons, the characteristics of “light”, and the objects we can see in the sky…Sounds
exciting! We are working very hard to become better readers and writers, and we
need your help! Please let your child read to you each day and practice those Sight
Words!

Second Grade
Our second-grade students are excited about learning! In math, please make sure
you are practicing your math facts each night. If the sheet is signed and returned on
the following Mondays, there will be a reward. For ELA, please make sure you read
for twenty minutes each day. There is a fluency passage sent home on Mondays
each week, and if it is signed and returned the following Mondays, there will be a
reward. Don’t forget to check your child’s folder and planner each night. Any
important information will be in one or both places.

Third Grade Math

Our third-grade students have started the year strong! In math, this is the year for
MULTIPLICATION!! I know your child is excited to learn this skill and we are eager
to get started teaching them. Learning multiplication isn't just memorization. We teach
many solution paths to assist your child in finding an answer. To help assist your
child, a solid knowledge of addition facts is needed. If your child needs extra
practice on addition facts or you would like to practice multiplication facts with them
at home, you can buy flashcards at any Dollar Tree for a low price. There are math
sites they can use at home to practice multiplication also. (IXL, multiplication.com,
brainormous, etc..) Your child should have information in their planner for any site
that requires a password. We truly appreciate everything you do at home to assist
your child in learning new things.

Third Grade ELA
In Reading, an ELA (English Language Arts) newsletter comes home every
Monday. This is your child's study guide. Reading at home is a very important part
of a child’s development. It creates a connection between the home and school and
allows students the opportunity to practice new reading skills such as fluency and
comprehension. Here are some tips for integrating reading into your daily family
activities: read stories, play a board game, visit your local library, read a recipe
and cook something yummy together, or put your child in charge of reading the
grocery list at the store. Thank you for all that you do to support your child at
home!

Fourth Grade
During the month of September, fourth graders will be learning about ecosystems
and how energy flows in a cycle in Science. In Social Studies, they will be learning
about the settling of colonies and King Phillip's War leading up to the American
Revolution. In Math, they are working on place value, comparing numbers,
rounding, and multiplication. The deadline for class T-shirts is September the 14th.
Our shirts will not be back in time for our field trip on Sept. 20th so please just
have your child wear a Lincoln Heights shirt, if they have one.

Fifth Grade
We are truly enjoying your children, and we have gotten off to a great start.
Thanks to all of you who attended Parent Night. During the month of September, we
will be working on main idea and details in Mrs. Goan's ELA. Make sure your
student is bringing home their reading story and reading it each night. Ask them
questions about their story (what is it about, what did the characters learn?, etc).
We will have a test every week on the story. In Mrs. Burchfield's ELA, we will be
working on the solar system and reading and understanding complex texts. Please
check your child's planner to stay up to date with daily activities. In math with Ms.
Brooks, students have been learning how to write decimal numbers in standard
form, word form, and expanded form. Please review decimal numbers with your
child (The grocery store is a great place to practice). Also, please have your child
learn and memorize multiplication facts. It is imperative that students are fluently
multiplying in order to master 5th grade standards. If you have any questions,
please feel free to call or email us.

EL Update
This month, ELs who tested out of the program will be celebrating that success with
a special treat on September 4th. Parents of these students will also be included so
they can celebrate this huge accomplishment with their students! CONGRATS to
these students!!
